Its actually fairly easy to take the knob apart. First, you remove the shift boot from the center console by simply pulling up on the leather at the edges. It just snaps off. You will then pull the leather boot up over the shft knob so that the boot is pretty much inside-out.

You will then see a black plastic locking ring. You give the black ring a 1/4 turn to unlock the shifter from the steel shifter rod. You then pull straight up and the shifter knob will easily come off.

Now, with the leather boot still inside-out, you will gently pry the black plastic ring (the one that you gave a 1/4 turn) from the base where it touches the leather boot. It will snap off.

Then, take the boot off, slide off the silver ring on the other side of the boot and the knob will come apart in two peices. Thats as far as I have been able to go ..... Hopefully we can get this figured out.

Here's the part number for one with the AMG lettering engraved on the top

A171 267 0234 = 85 Euro / AMG Plakette

When you say AMG logo is that "AMG" lettering or the AMG symbol posted earlier from the black series car? Personally, I would like the symbol as in the black series car. Could you post a pic of yours for comparison?

Aquascape has the same gearshift as pictured above. However, it seems you cannot simply purchase the plakette alone. Instead, you must purchase the entire gearshift assembly. This costs roughly $400US.

If someone can figure out how to safely remove the basic one, then MAYBE we can order just the plakette and make the change... if MB even allows that.

Mine just has ///AMG engraved onto it, no logo like in the picture

I will try and take a picture but it is difficult as it is a mirrored finish with the ///AMG engraved across it and is very difficult to take a picture of

Do it in daylight, in the shade and no flash.

Count me in too or reserve one for me , but I gotta wait until I get to switch. :D

Thank you aquascape for the photos. If given a choice, I still prefer the one posted by Easty:

Anyone found out if these caps are steel yet? or a source for steel/chrome caps that would go over the original? once again, if anyone finds out either, i can then go and engrave it...
