I too took the plunge, and used one of the 'pressed type ...

I had to drill the original centre part to get it out - It wouldn't budge with a flat blade or small screwdriver ... you can see it in the rear of the pic ...

Thanks to Craige for the link!!

Very nice ! Link ?

Here's what I currently have. Sean's black leather + embossed badge looks great! I'm really tempted to copycat that setup.

Thanks to foxyboy and Curro101, I installed this about 30 minutes ago.

It is NOT plug and play, as I had to get a donor base plastic plate. The black alcantara shift cover/sleeve is on the baggy side as it had more material than the leather sleeve in the R171.

Dependent upon mood I can switch to this too:

Here's a summary of the steps:

1. Release the Alcantara shroud from the square base plate of the C63 by carefully removing the staples used to attach the shroud to the plastic base.

2. Find a donor rectangular base from an inexpensive R171 gear shift assembly sold on FleaBay, and remove the shroud from the rectangular base plate, usually attached using staples.

3. Align the Alcantara cloth (from C63 gear shift assembly) to R171 donor base plate. I aligned the front and back at its midline to the respective midline of the rectangular R171 base plate. I then marked a line of white dots, 1 cm apart around the perimeter of the R171 base plate & using a hobby drill, made small holes following the white dots. IIRC, the drill size I used was a hobby drill bit size no. 75 , enough to accommodate needle & thread. Attach the Alcantara shroud to R171 base plate using black needle and thread, taking care to not cover the four anchoring "clips" on the base plate. The Alcantara has more material than the OEM R171, so it may look slightly on the "baggy" side when done, but still looks OEM.
