I know some people have asked about this.

I changed my gear knob for one with an AMG logo on. They are not cheap though, here is the info. You need to buy either the leather one or the wooden one and the MAg plakette at the same time (you can choose either AMG logo or AMG picture) and they come pre asembled. The expensive bit is that the 220 Euro leather gearshoft is exactly teh same as the one that comes with teh car so you only really need the 85Euro plakette but you cannot fit it to teh existing gear knob.

Here the prices and part numbers from AMG for the different items:

:
A171 267 2910 = 220 Euro / Leather gearshift
A171 267 3010 D01 = 430 Euro / wood/leather gear shift
A171 267 0234 = 85 Euro / AMG Plakette

I got mine from here

Thanks loads mate. any images?

I raised a a thread on this topic on the AMG forum to get a cheaper alternative, with loads of support from members but no reply from AMG, i guess this is the only option at the moment... Again pics. ;)

I will try and take some pictures when i get change.

The look nice. There is a mirrored/chrome effect on the top with the ///AMG logo engraved into it and the surround is made of the soft black nappa leather

They do a wood finish. This is the part number

A171 267 3010 D01

I think the D01 at the end is the type of wood

Hmmm...

So I was bored today and decided to dismantle my gearshift. I found you can go this far. That said, is there a way to simply change this last piece? If not, is there an AMG emblem that is roughly 26-28mm wide? Maybe that and some double stick tape would work.

after taking it apart is there some way to remove that plain silver top and replace it with something else or is that one piece? thats one of my biggest issues with the interior of my car ... the 350s at least get the MB logo but the 55s gets nothing ???

Looking at the picture above, that was the furthest I could go. There was no way to remove the cap unless, perhaps you pull apart the stitching... something I wasn't going to attempt.

Bill, I look forward to your "fix." Any more details?

yeah, i got about as far as you did...except i managed to scratch the leather a little bit :(

Let's hear about it bill...if you can get the metal caps that fit, i could engrave them at my shop here...

This might be a good one for the prototype. (hint: Edward :))

Excuse my ignorance, what's on the shift knob of the SLK 55 anyway? the three-pointed star?

Thats not mine sorry mate just an image from the black series SLK. I've been trying to find it for a while. even got a thread on the official AMG forum to try and get them supplying them out here. No luck even with good responce.

I just took my knob apart as in the previous photos. Maybe someone who is more mechanically inclined wants to tackle this job; If you look in the shifter hole, you can see metal inside and there is some kind of fastening mechanism in there that holds the silver plate in place. I fiddled for about 45 mins but I was unable to figure out how to release it. Maybe someone here will have better luck .....

the top of my slk 55 shift knob is blank. as in completely blank...it's just silver paint. it feels like plastic to me. if it's metal for sure, you guys can just give me the whole knob and i can engrave on it...but i didn't want to risk melting it if it's plastic.

BTW, the SLK 55 black series knob is laser engraved...exactly the same process that i can do, if i can find chrome blanks to engrave on.

 not even a three-pointed star? I'm having second thoughts about switching to the 55.

Just kidding. Can someone post a narrative/tutorial on how to dismantle the knob?

Its actually fairly easy to take the knob apart. First, you remove the shift boot from the center console by simply pulling up on the leather at the edges. It just snaps off. You will then pull the leather boot up over the shft knob so that the boot is pretty much inside-out.

You will then see a black plastic locking ring. You give the black ring a 1/4 turn to unlock the shifter from the steel shifter rod. You then pull straight up and the shifter knob will easily come off.

Now, with the leather boot still inside-out, you will gently pry the black plastic ring (the one that you gave a 1/4 turn) from the base where it touches the leather boot. It will snap off.

Then, take the boot off, slide off the silver ring on the other side of the boot and the knob will come apart in two peices. Thats as far as I have been able to go ..... Hopefully we can get this figured out.

Aquascape has the same gearshift as pictured above. However, it seems you cannot simply purchase the plakette alone. Instead, you must purchase the entire gearshift assembly. This costs roughly $400US.

If someone can figure out how to safely remove the basic one, then MAYBE we can order just the plakette and make the change... if MB even allows that.

Mine just has ///AMG engraved onto it, no logo like in the picture

I will try and take a picture but it is difficult as it is a mirrored finish with the ///AMG engraved across it and is very difficult to take a picture of

Do it in daylight, in the shade and no flash.

Count me in too or reserve one for me , but I gotta wait until I get to switch. :D
