I'm thinking of getting the SmartTop. The few places that can sell and fit them are very far. Still, I'd love to have it asap. First, I need to know if I have the smartkey options. Who knows, maybe previous owner bought that option, heh?

I never heard about the smartkey option. How do I test to see if my car has it?

 

Tired of standing outside your car with your keyfob/smartkey pointed at your door handle for 22 seconds looking like an idiot while the roof cycles?

Is opening the roof with the keyfob a standard feature of the R171 or is that a SmartTop addon?

So useful in summer and in Blighty.
Just over 20 seconds and the rain is held at bay.

Best thing I bought, after the 55.

We promote ST as it is a great addition for those seeking the features and they have given great support to folks over the years.

Great to know they have not changed.

Update problem settled (but not really resolved). As always, Stefan responded to my ticket just hours after it was sent. With an exchange of notes, he assessed the problem as a bad chip in the unit I installed almost exactly 13 years ago (since addressed in newer versions). So my unit's firmware can't be updated. But it still works perfectly and Stefan assured me I'm not missing anything new since the last successful update in 2018 when I added the Spyder DRL headlights. Gotta love those guys.

 

Submitted tech support ticket help for USB update failure. Thanks for pointing me. Hopeful that an update will add text access but even if not, I want to keep the ST current. The SmartTop is still the most valuable and useful addition I've made to the SLK in my 15 years of ownership. The fact that it's still being supported and improved is amazing in it's own realm. Worth well over the investment. Thanks for keeping the forum support for it active.

Just tried to update the firmware but not working. It's no longer a simple message to ask the folks at Mods4Cars. No direct email that I can see and the tech support forum isn't helping. Getting "USB device not recognized" but when I download the driver file, that isn't giving me access. Used the same laptop I used to update in 2018 and then a newer, Win 11 laptop. Same. I had left the USB cable in the module so it was simple to find but now I wish I'd left a longer one. Getting the message when I try to update that the correct driver is already installed but ST still not recognized and won't connect. Are Stefan and Sven still there?

From a dedicated and long-term SmartTop user, I have a question that may not yet have an answer. @jbanks15 in the most recent thread here lists SmartTop capabilities I don't have since it was 2018 when I last updated mine. I've recently added the mObridge Bluetooth module but it doesn't give me text display. Can anyone tell me if I updated the ST firmware to the current generation will it provide the text function? Probably something I should do, anyway. Love the SmartTop, though.

 

You should deffo ask the ST folks on their website as they would be the ones in the know.

 

I had to buy it twice (the first one killed by water leak) - still I think it's well worth to pay
