Hi All. This morning a few seconds after starting the car, The Pre-Safe mode inoperative error message flashed up and the Red Battery warning light. The car appears to run fine but certain functions are disabled like the Eco mode button. I don’t have diagnostics currently but can take it to the garage or purchase one if needs be. Just wondered if any of our more experienced techs could shed any light on the obvious things to check? Thanks in advance all ?

Thanks Guys for your prompt replies.
i860 Ive done a quick multimeter check on the battery
With the engine off it reads 12.49 volts
Engine idling it reads 14.8 volts.

what sort of figures should i be getting and could it still be that its registering a fault under load?

Are there any other warning lights or messages? I suspect it could be a wheel speed sensor but you need to get the error read to confirm the fault.

So on the advice of i860. I bought a Cartman battery tester. The results are as follows:
Check Before Charge OK (Green)
Battery State Full (Green)
Alternator State Fault (red)

Voltage output from battery when stationery 12.4 V
Voltage Output when engine running 14.8V

To a complete novice, that would appear that the alternator is charging the battery atleast but is it possible it could be some regulator issue causing it to overcharge?

I bought a basic Creator scanner and a few codes showed up but none actually mentioning the alternator directly. Here are the codes and perhaps someone could shed some light on them and advise if any of these sound like an obvious link to the fault being shown on the Command unit.

I understand this may be a garage issue but its always an advantage to go to a garage with some experienced info if possible :)

So the fault codes read are as follows:

control unit reversible emergency tensioning retractor has a malfunction. The signal comparison is faulty.

The relay decoupling of starter battery has a malfunction. The actuator is blocked.

The output for the mirror heater has a malfunction. There is a short circuit to positive or an open circuit.

The charge movement flap (cylinder bank 1) has a malfunction. The signal amplitude is less than the minimum amplitude.

Really appreciate any input you could give guys. Thanks

It is a bit of a read but the attached pdf describes the start stop technology, decoupling relays, function of the starter battery and auxiliary battery etc. See page 18 Battery "Red". Your car will have an Auxiliary Battery. Just as a suggestion turn off the ECO when you start the car and see if you still get the presafe warning. On a slightly different problem , have you recently washed the car? When checking on my CARLY OBD reader the mirror heater came up as malfunctioning and I had just washed the car. Hair dryer later problem gone but I now don't spray water at the mirror glass.

Just an after thought... The ECO Start/Stop button lights up as normal on start up but as soon as the fault flashes up on the dash, this function is disabled.!
Ive read on some of the forums that the R172 has an auxiliary battery behind the passenger seat? Is this on all models and could this be the battery thats at fault?
Just plucking at straws obviously but i understand that the Auxiliary battery controls the ECO Start/Stop so wondering if it controls The PRE Safe mode too?
