Hi, I have an 2007 SLK and my DVD disk is a 2007 version. Can someone tell me if a newer version will have better graphics then my current older one before I invest in a newer one? Or, are the graphics (currently primitive by todays standards) limited by the age of my comand unit?

The quality of the graphics are limited by the age of your Comand unit (1 'm' in Comand - I'll fix it in your post for you). An update DVD would provide more up-to-date maps, but the quality of the graphics would remain the same.

I have an 05. I did a map update and while, indeed, the graphics remained the same, it was like a new head unit had been installed. The 05 version was so bad, it only had a few streets in my city. I never got it find an address I was trying to input. The update has everything. It turned navigation from useless to very helpful. I just wish it displayed time and distance. I have had a number of GPS units that were older, but all showed time and distance to destination.

There is always risk when something is tried. I decided to update my COMAND in order to get the time/distance feature. The CD will not eject. I never used the CD player so I don't know if it worked before. Looks like my plan is to remove the head unit, take the top off and try to get the CD out. Anybody have a simple/better way to do this?

Just an FYI..
the Navigation DVD disc with map data goes into the unit located in the trunk/boot compartment for the pre-facelift R171. It (Navigation DVD) does not go into the single CD player of the COMAND head unit.

IIRC, there is a COMAND update disc (this is different from the Navigation DVD disc with map data). This one goes into the COMAND head unit.

that comand update link is for european cars only :D but 2 usa members were successful

try a battery reset to eject

disconnect the neg cable for a minimum of 30 minutes
reconnect cable
reset clock and synch windows
try to eject cd

I will do that first. I am not sure the CD was working when I started. In hindsight, I should have tried with a music CD first. Going into the head unit is not a big deal for me. Have done it before.

Edited to add: the last time I disconnected the battery, the clock reset itself, but it took 22 hours. I was beginning to think I was going to have to do it manually.

Edited again: No joy, but worth a try. When I get the head unit out, will try the update again ! :surprise:

Thanks guys. Did some checking today and found the GPS to be off by a few miles. It had been dead on accurate until I put the update CD in the head unit. I did a reset as mentioned above and it deleted personal waypoints, but continued showing inaccurate location and the CD still would not eject.I took the head unit out of the car, disassembled it, removed the CD player and coaxed the CD out. Reinstalled unit and tried and played a music CD. It ejected normally. I then put the update CD in. It didn't update and then ejected on its own. I'm hopeful the unit will "find" it's correct location. I have not set the clock and it has not reset on its own yet. Perhaps the GPS will correct its location when it resets the clock.

In hindsight, I used a partially used CD to download the update since I did not have a blank one. That could have started the problem. I only have DVDs presently. I am going to try and find a Blank CD tomorrow and try again to update the head unit.

Thanks,

Ed

Just in case someone should find this later and need to remove a stuck CD, I add this: Once the head unit is out of the car and on the bench, open the top by removing two screws. Carefully open the top and remove the ribbon cable going to the CD player, which is in the top. Remove the CD player by removing 4 small screws, one at each corner. When the player is removed from the head, you will see a small slot in the back and the loading slot in the front. There is a cone shaped spindle that fits into the center of the CD and that is what is holding it. Take a flat tip screwdriver and place it through the back slot and onto the edge of the CD, then put GENTLE pressure forward. It if comes out, you are lucky and finished. If not, get a long flat object such as a hackwaw blade and put it in the front slot. While applying GENTLE pressure from the back, twist the blade....also gently. The CD will begin to move up on the spindle, which will still have resistance. The CD will continue moving out as it moves up on the spindle. When you get the CD far enough out to grasp with a finger, you can use a little more pressure and it will slide out. There may be a better way, but this worked for me. Good luck !! 0:)

Here is an update. I got a clean download of the head update software. Placed the new CD in the head CD slot. After a few seconds it says "Incorrect Variant", so it is the wrong software for my unit. I suppose that is because it is the European version. It kicked the CD back out.......... but I still have not corrected what I did with the bad disk. I need to return the unit to functioning status. Anyone have head software or thoughts? In searching, I find the dealers don't know anything about software updates for the R171 COMAND head unit. I don't mind paying for it, I just can't find it. It would be nice to get the Time and distance to destination, BUT just getting it back the way it was would be satisfactory.

I can't leave well enough alone !!! Everything on head head unit seems to be working except navigation.

Thanks,

Ed
