Hi, i have an issue with the map/nav function on my comand where on long journeys (45 mins+) a message pops up on the comand screen that says something like "Please insert disc........" this message will remain on the screen for 5 minutes then go off for 5 mins and display the route/map again and so on until i arrive somewhere, it continues until the car is turned off. I'm using a non-official merc dvd in the drive and i personally think its the drive being funny with it.

Does anyone have a familiar issue or know where to get a decent dvd from?

Thanks as always

I'm using a non-official merc dvd

that is your answer
non official discs have been known to 'brick' your dvd head

is this for your navigation or your comand needing an update?

comand update:

Daimler AG - Service & Parts net

get your disks here for nav :

MB | Home | HERE
Thanks for COMAND update link... worked like a charm!

I'm getting a Navigation Function Not Available... could this be disk related?

Oh cr@p!
Do I have to drive on the left or something now?!?
I saw the English download and didn't read the header on the page...
My car is a U.S. car, born in Germany but lived it's whole life South of Houston, TX until I got my hands on it... do you think I screwed it up?

where r u getting the error? in nav?
do you have nav?
I've got NAV and Map buttons on my COMAND (see I learn quick :)
... I checked my DataCard and it shows U.S. Version and "COMAND DVD PLUS (WITHOUT NAVIGATION)"

... so, I guessing I've been duped into thinking I had NAV and I just needed a disk. Any way to upgrade to NAV in my situation? Will buying the disk work?

i don't want to commandeer this thread, but it would serve us all to remain diligent in the proper use of acronyms. Some people seem to be rather particular about it.

We have the COMAND NAV thingy in the 05 e320. I used the disc as a frisbee since I don't see the logic in used big an outdated DVD to navigate. Our phone has real time GPS programs, isn't that better? I don't get it, why would anyone use the CONAND for that? Does it do other things

No reason to be a Barbarian...
As for the factory 12 year old navigation, with updated maps it is quite reasonable, and I like the display in the MFD with distance to turns without fumbling with another device.

yes, I installed the Conan the Barbarian NAV system. It tells me where to go-literally, or it hurts me.

Color me stupid I didn't know the maps could be updated. Maybe I should but the disc....nah, just a new phone, then I might be able to search threads.

I'm thinking on my raggedy old 05 I couldn't update, but there is much I don't know.

They have a Mr. T voice for GPS... that's pretty funny

no nav then use your smartphone! :D
buying nav disk will not work if no nav unit in your trunk

usually the comand update gives the nav eta at the bottom (plus other things i assume)
but since u don't have nav, you cannot check for the eta upgrade feature

On mine, I have the GPS coordinates, number of satellites, and elevation at the bottom(while on a route and while just the plain map is on). Can you (or anybody else) tell me that when you update and the eta info is on the bottom while routing to a destination, what do you see when NOT on a route? Can you still see the elevation on the main map screen?
(A picture would be great!)

As per the instructions on the link to the update disc:

Procedure for downloading the image file (with Nero):
1. Label the unwritten blank CD with a permanent marker as follows:
Software Service CD, W171 589 03 22 00
2. Proceed with a left mouse click on the software download and "Save" the file.
3. Open the Nero burning program.
4. Click on the "Recorder" menu and select the "Burn Image" menu option.
5. A window opens automatically. Use this window to select the previously saved file.
6. A new window, "Burn Compilation", then opens. In the pull-down menu at the left, select the "CD"
setting, and then "Finalize CD".
7. Start the burning process by clicking the "Burn" button.

Eehhhmm..don't know and I might be wrong, but it could be you need to use a CD...>:D

which update?
comand or navigation?
both are dvds
and they go into different places
nav in the trunk
comand in the comand hu slot
cannot be copies or pirated or you might brick your headunit

If you can't use a copy why does it have the update available online so you can make copies? I've just burned a DVD with the update on for the head unit and it just stays on update mode please insert disc. Any ideas?

if you are referring to the comand update link I posted, then yes, you can use a cd or dvd but it also depends on how you are burning it. by that I mean, are you using cheap disks or better ones?
what burning software you use makes a difference
also what burning speed are you using? usually you want to burn at the slowest speed

I'm using tesco DVD RW+ and cyber link burning software. Burned it at 4x speed and I've double checked the disk so all 7 files are present.

brought cd-r tonight (ÂŁ16.....WTÂŁ) and burned the image to one of these. Inserted into comand head unit and 10 mins later......updated. I'll try the new update tomorrow and see what effect it has on the disc issue.

btw - does anyone know exactly whats included in this update?

#35 ·
Out of the top of my head, I believe some bugfixes, but main update is that you now can display ETA and remaining distance at the bottom of the nav screen. Furthermore when you managed to get in engineering mode the configuration option for Video In Motion is now removed. But that's about it.

But ÂŁ16 for a CD-R ???????????? 1 CD-R???????????
Aamzon sells them for ÂŁ2,79 for a 10-pack............

Use '-R' disks with non-PC devices like the navi unit. Name brand helps, too. Philips has worked well for me.

-R works in "dumb" devices like navi units, older home DVD players, CD music players that were built to read plain ole manufactured CD's. (Fun Historic Note: In WIS, the AUX-IN connection on the schematic for the COMAND head unit is called the "Walkman input" so us old timers know what we're dealing with, folks.), etc.

+R has some enhancements mainly that Windows can take advantage of; older devices designed for manufactured disks can get confused by +R.

You can remember it easily by thinking of it like school grades: the less capable devices get a grade of R- and their more capable PC peers get an R+.

Who even sells disks anymore? I probably shouldn't mention the reason I have some is back in 2011 the smartphone integration project was born because I was trying to hack the navi map DVD format. I simply wanted to add my own points of interest, a feature of some Japanese car that actually had downloadable software so you could re-burn a personalized navi disk. They encouraged you to do it! Didn't take long to figure out mirroring your phone's GPS apps is way better.
