How do interested parties order these? Cost? Make 20 units and send to Ken and he can "sell" via SLK store?

It looks the the connection to the 3rd brake light is on the right side of the vehicle (based on person seated at the driver's position). Here's a link to show how one can get enough length of wire so the controller unit can be housed in the same area where the folding warning triangle is located (not supplied in US spec vehicles), and thus is easily accessible to change the settings.

Why are there 4 sets of identical-looking settings per mode?e.g., settings 1-4 look identical in that it is fast flashing mode, and is always active. I presume it is the number of flashes that are different. Would 1 = 1 burst-like flash, 2 = 2 flashes, 3 = 3 flashes and 4 = 4 flashes?

:tu:I received John's version of the flashing third brake light module this afternoon. I was off and installed it. Small, nicely constructed wiring harness with flashing module. Easy to install, ten minute job, two connectors, and a great price. Programming is just as easy with John's instructions. I went with #4, four quick flashes, always on. We can add this to our list of "best" low cost mods for the R171 (SmartTop, modified R170 shorty antenna, clear front marker lights, the new, non resistor, LED lights and the SLKWorld.com decal). Thanks John for this product and all you do on SLKWorld.com. I made a contribution to the site for John's effort.
Got any video?

I don't know how to link a post in a response. But, this is post #22 of this thread. If you go to post #22, this information is in a .pdf document that you can print out and keep with your automobile's records.

Mode's are selected by pressing the microswitch, which toggles to the next mode.
When you select the mode, the 3rd brake light will "flash" in the style selected.
It's important to remember that the "delay" will prevent the "flash" mode from being triggered
just by pressing the pedal.
So when testing, take the delay into account! (if you press the pedal, the third light will not flash
if you are within the delay period.)
Mode 37 - the "last" mode - disables the flasher completely.

All fitted and working thanks John. Took a while though, when i took the black plastic cover off the boot lid I found the rear of the brake light assembly rattling around, the 3 bolts that are Tee bolted into the redlight had broken away from the light! had to super glue and build up filler around the repair and then to bolt the light back in place.

Wondered if they broke thru stress or a heavy handed mechanic overtightening them?

I presume to change the settings you have to press the brake pedal at the same time as pressing the microswitch ? I doesn't seem to change by just pressing switch.
You'll have to do it like Mr. Bean, except you place the heavy brick on the brake pedal and not on the accelerator :biglaugh:

Noted the 3rd brake light was not working at all 2 nights ago, so took the trunk lid inner cover off and found the fuse holder tabs in the Kleyman 3BFM has broken off and the 2 parts (of the fuseholder) have loosened, ergo an open circuit.

I installed John's 3BFM and it took less than 60 seconds to install once the inner cover was off. The male and female connectors are fantastic OEm quality with A+ build quality on the harness. The Kleyman module is still functional, I just have to replace/repair the fuse-holder.

Questions:

1. Is there a way to program John's 3BFM while not attached to the vehicle? I just didn't want to bother the mate.

2. Where does one get the black cloth tape? what brand? SKU number?

Hi etyu

so you can reprogram the unit with out taking the trim off .

Cheers

Andy
I did thread the mini-switch that is used to program the flashing module through an opening in the trim and it is "velcro'd". I just need an assistant (mate) to push on the brake pedal as I use the switch to program to the desired settings, currently at 4 quick flashes with no timed delay.

I was just curious about another way.

That's an idea. I could retract the roof and use a long pole (happen to have a telescoping aluminum pole) instead to press on the brake pedal.

Big thanks to John for bring my flashing brake light "gizmo" and fitting for me in a couple of minutes that would probably have taken be hours, not to mention the loss of several finger nails. How do I find the link that gives me the sequence info ???

Hi John

Had one of your 3rd brake light flashing units fitted for well over a year now , I have had a 3rd brake light error( bulb out) 3 times , but i turn ign off & back on & the error has gone , I think this is only happening if i have parked car with the sun beating down onto the boot lid . No problems with unit works great , So letting you know . I could put a some-thing around unit to to reflex the heat & see how it goes .

Cheers

Andy
Are all the LEDs lit when one steps on the brake pedal?
