How do interested parties order these? Cost? Make 20 units and send to Ken and he can "sell" via SLK store?

First five are through me directly to gauge interest. I'm gonna talk to Ken as soon as I'm stateside on the 6th.

These are $28 for the adapter and the third light flasher as a complete plug and play solution. One is spoken for, so I've got four available out of this batch - would prefer that these go to people in the US / Canada, and would ship out around May 7th or so.

I would want one as well - thanks for your effort and making the installation look simple ....

It looks the the connection to the 3rd brake light is on the right side of the vehicle (based on person seated at the driver's position). Here's a link to show how one can get enough length of wire so the controller unit can be housed in the same area where the folding warning triangle is located (not supplied in US spec vehicles), and thus is easily accessible to change the settings.

Ok Guys - modules are finished, and came out better than I expected. I'll send out PM's to those who (Rick, Eddy, Gregg, and Don) requested 'em for shipping details, and they should ship on Monday, assuming you get back to me with your addresses!

Install is super straightforward - particularly for US spec cars.

Module (yes, it really it that small!) :

Connectors :

Install Step One :

Remove the five trim pins for the upper trunk cover. On US spec cars, this is the one with the "Help Me" button on it. These trim pins have a "nail" in the center - pry it out, and the pry out the retaining plug. Keep in mind that while the cover is clipped into place, it tends to "fall" down as the last plug is removed.
Image

Disconnect the trunk release cable. Depress the small clip with the arrow, and it will release the plug.
Image

Put the cover to the side. Look into the upper left of the exposed opening, and you will see a plug connecting to the third brake light. Unplug this plug - again by depressing the clip.

Image

Take the third brake flasher, and plug the connector you just removed into the female socket. This is the larger of the two connectors. It's keyed, and will only fit one way.

Now plug the male plug into the third brake light. Again, this connector is keyed, and will only fit one way.

Both of the connectors should clip securely into place with a "click". You will now have the new harness in place, with an extra white wire harness with a micro-switch on it hanging down.

Pick up the trunk cover, and one of the trim plugs. Connect the emergency trunk plug, and run the wire with the microswitch out through the opening on the right side of the "top" of the cover.

Fit the cover back in place, and hold it in with the trim plug. Have your helper hit the brake pedal, and your third brake light should light up. Press the microswitch to "toggle" through the different flasher modes until you find one you like. The microswitch is small - but it's pretty easy to "squeeze" it and you can feel it "click" each time contact is made. Just make sure you are squeezing it "top to bottom" and not from the sides! :)

Image

I've included a double-sided tape wire clamp so that you can fasten the programming switch to the outside of the cover if you desire. if you don't want to have it outside of the cover, remove the plug, and fasten the wire clamp to the inner surface of the trunk lid.

Image

Regardless of where you decide to fasten it, use an isopropanol alcohol wipe to clean the area you are going to stick the tape to.

Enjoy, feedback welcome!

FYI, I have an extra module for shipment in the states - first come, first served! ;-)

I should have another 5 ready to go for the stateside crowd when we get back from the shuttle launch, so figure shipping around 24th - price is up $2, as I didn't figure the costs for the programming switch in the first batch! :)

pffffffffffffffffft - you just think you're sorted! :)

So I've got more modules in-route, so anyone in the states who wants one, drop me a PM. If you are not a supporting member, the price is $35usd, $30 usd if you are a supporting member.

I'm not going to ship or fabricate any of this "second" batch until I get some feedback from the first set, so figure about the week of the 24th of May.

Programming and mode descriptions are attached - I forgot to include 'em in the packages I sent out! :)

Why are there 4 sets of identical-looking settings per mode?e.g., settings 1-4 look identical in that it is fast flashing mode, and is always active. I presume it is the number of flashes that are different. Would 1 = 1 burst-like flash, 2 = 2 flashes, 3 = 3 flashes and 4 = 4 flashes?

:tu:I received John's version of the flashing third brake light module this afternoon. I was off and installed it. Small, nicely constructed wiring harness with flashing module. Easy to install, ten minute job, two connectors, and a great price. Programming is just as easy with John's instructions. I went with #4, four quick flashes, always on. We can add this to our list of "best" low cost mods for the R171 (SmartTop, modified shorty antenna, clear front marker lights, the new, non resistor, LED lights and the SLKWorld.com decal). Thanks John for this product and all you do on SLKWorld.com. I made a contribution to the site for John's effort.
