Hi, can anyone help, every time I try to buy something from any merc dealer they tell me my car has a manual gearbox. I have used benzcat and it says correctly I have an auto gearbox. The parts dept at merc says my vin on their books is a manual WDB 1704492F221743 any ideas.6

That is very odd. And you say 'everytime' so unlikely a case of them entering the VIN incorrectly.
That epc listing is the official Daimler Benz card for your VIN.

So, if we see 'Auto' so should they.

Such an unusual question that I suspect we will need insider knowledge.
@Dave2302 may be able to shed some light.

Not exactly, yours says the same as all of mine :ROFLMAO: ....................

My Data says the same across all 4 of my Machines, the problem here is not the SA Codes, they clearly list 5 Speed Auto 3 lines down, but if you look above those the Car is listed with M111 Engine and 716 630, (Manual Trans) .........................

I reckon that is what the Dealership (or it's software) is looking at ;)

I would guess this car was picked off the Production Line, or even from the Dealership as a Manual Vehicle, and then converted to Disabled Spec, including an Auto Trans ....................

It looks like whoever converted / built that Car for it's original owner did not update FDOK ;)

The way to rectify this is to (probably pay) the Dealership to inspect the Car and update FDOK with the retrofitted equipment maybe that will help ;)

HTH,

Thanks, I think a light is coming on, I remember one of the guys in the parts dept saying 716 was a manual box but on my vin it says auto (mine is tiptronic). The reason I want to get this right is I am planning to change the transmission oil, the oil cooler pipes are corroded so I will change these as well. Problem is the dealer is looking at a similar car to mine to get the right parts. As they are expensive the dealer wants me to confirm they are correct, I look to the dealer to give me the right parts and of course they will not change parts if they are incorrect.

Thanks guys

Hi, could I assume the oil cooler pipes would be the same length and diameter on all auto boxes around 2001 (170 model ) or would I have to be careful the dealer is not looking at a 171 which may be different ? Or even a pre 2000 which had the plug to drain torque ?

Or V6 Car or or ............. ;)

No make certain you get the ones from same Engine and obviously a 5 speed auto, so 722.6 xx , so really you need the VIN fom a factory Auto 230 Engined Car with same engine perhaps someone from UK canm help out, if you had a V6 Car could tell you the part numbers, but without a VIN simply don't know if they are different or not between different 4 cylinder engines ;)

Dunno if @M4rCu5 might be able to help, think he has a 4 Cyl but I don't know what cogbox etc

Thank for the advice.

I really should get the car up so as to find and read numbers, only got ramps, so need to take it to the shop. Where would the transmission number be stamped ?

Thanks, theres that horrible plastic connector in the picture, left me stranded in my other merc last year in the middle of know where when oil got in. Must remember to clean or replace when the oil is changed.

The actual Trans number is on the other side etched / engraved in a machined flat surface ................

But the trans is not the issue, AFAIK, (and I've seen a lot of 722.6) all 722.6 have the same Cooler Pipe exits on the Bell Housing, in exactly the same place, the issue is the Engine, and the Radiators etc, because the pipes run along pan level and then to the Cooler in the Radiator !!

Mercedes then compound the problem because they can only get correct parts from VIN number, and clearly in this case your VIN is no good .....................

So go back to my previous post, you need to find the VIN number for a R170 SLK, same year as yours with 722.6 Auto, and the 230 4 Cyl Engine, then you stand the best chance you got of getting the correct parts ;)

Thank you for all the advice.

I asked a question on may 8 2019 under engine re my vin.

I have e mailed the very helpful parts dept in Neyland Wales who said to me last week he had found a car similar to mine. My data card is obviously not correct and I need to look at the numbers on the engine and box.
Do you think merc in germany could shed some light on the model by giving them the order/build number ?

Hi, sorry to bore you all, I think I maybe getting my head around this cars vin, I think all 230 s were sold as manual but an auto was optional extra at around 1300 usd. This is why my vin shows a manual box (716) but under sa code (423) it shows auto box. Does this make sense ?

Thanks for the pics, my car is 300 miles away at mo but I will be checking the number if I can see it. I have contacted a really helpful guy at mercedes north wales who's firm serviced the car in 2005 and sold it in 2012, he says he will try and find the original garage who sold it in 2001 so I can contact. I am suspecting my car is a slk 200 not 230
