Rusty Wings (new ones ?)

Ok ive read lots of things about the dreaded rust on front wings of the R170 but no one seems to have a solution.
In the early 70's we use to just get new wings fitted (had it done twice on my 1970 1600GT Capri) is this not a option these days.
Can you get new wings if so are they so expensive it will cost more than the car is worth ?
Just wondering as my front nearside is just starting to bubble offside seems fine.

The wings are bolt on so cant be that bad to get fitted. I know painting them will be costly just wondered why ive not heard of anyone putting new wings on.
Perhaps now the the cars have only got old enough for owners to think of doing it ?

I think it's both of those issues, the wings last long-enough, that by the time you want to replace them, the total value of the car makes it less reasonable to replace the whole thing. Also, there are so many chemicals that make rust treatment easy that unless you have holes or pieces of metal falling off, it's easier, faster, and cheaper to just sand, treat (and sometimes sand and treat again), and spray.
Also, the rear wings are a pain in the ass to replace, much easier to just fix on the car.

Hi Dave if you know anyone in the trade get them to dealer stock order your wings from Mercedes i just paid £143.65 plus vat each, when your wings are removed the front inner wing bracket that the new wing mounts to will probably be well rotted you can't buy replacements so expect the bodyshop to charge a bit of fabrication time to make new ones and make sure the bodyshop use plenty of waxoil and underseal on completion

Welcome to SLKWorld.com: The #1 Mercedes-Benz SLK Forum from Valrico, Florida!

First please update your location and vehicle (year?: 1996-2016, model?: 32, 200, 230, 250, 280, 300,320,350,55) in your profile as it helps the members answer your questions which usually are based on that information if you haven’t. This takes about 30 seconds to do.
Follow exactly to update: ‘Usercp’ at the top of page, then ‘edit your details’ on the left side, ‘additional information’ near the bottom, edit your ‘location’ and ‘vehicle’. Info in your garage does not update your profile.

Your 1st thread should be your introduction so we can welcome you properly so post an introduction in the ‘New members introduce yourself here’ section, if you haven’t already. New Members Introduce Yourself Here - Mercedes Benz SLK Forum

Some tips to make your visit here more enjoyable:
If you haven’t, please use the 'search' feature at the top right of the page for your questions as they have probably been asked before. Remember, ‘Search’ is your friend.

Mine came with UK rust (lower arches where the metal meets the plastic) and I took it to my specialist who had a good look over it and took the view that cutting, welding, and smoothing pre any paint prep would cost more than plonking on a pair of new front wings (fenders)

Rust bubbles a concern

Hi Chas000,

Could you please supply details of the workshop that
refurbished your wings so well.

I have a 52 registered S.E. and I am starting to get
rust bubbles near the headlight join with the lower plastic front mudguard.

I am devoted to my SLK and would want to keep it looking as pristine as possible without costing the earth lol!

I live in North Merseyside, so a trip out for a quotation would be quite convenient for me.
Thanks in advance

have you tried the secondhand parts guys? A few years ago a supermarket shopper practiced his demolition skills on the right front wing of my FIAT(Fix It Again Tony) Punto. I went onto the internet and logged a request on one of the 24/7 spares suppliers giving all the specs they asked for. This is a networking system and the site then sent a message to all their subscribers. I was swamped with offers and the one I bought was because the guy took the trouble to phone me and confirm the condition of the item which true to his word was perfect including colour match. 24 hours later it arrived, well packed and within a couple of hours all was fixed at very little cost. If you're not a diy'er, then I guess you need to take your wallet for a spin down to the local panel shop. I can also give you a process to repair even fairly advanced rust where your base is in the form of a lace pattern. Let me know.

Anyone have any recommendations for places that would repair rusty wings/arches/fenders/mudguards :) in Berkshire, UK?

I have a couple of places to try but both sound like accident repair places, most likely funded by insurers where the price is less of a concern. For me, the price is a concern, but I would like a half decent job for a reasonable price.

In my experience the front wings should be replaced by new items. I got two rust free wings from ebay for £100 each. One is now rusting slightly. New ones unpainted are £135. My car is silver so they looked a slightly diffent colour. Eventually I had the rear arches repaired by Ringmer car care Sussex and repainted but due to the colour match problem had the doors painted to match. My advice would be to replace the frong wings with new items and the budget for repainting both sides of the car. Make sure whoever you use will give a guarantee that the rust will not reappear.

Thanks for the replies - sounds like I need some new wings. Shame, as I ruled out some other cars with other issues and chose this one thinking the rust would be an easy thing (little did I know that Mercedes, of all brands, had this dirty little secret on this model). I guess I'll take it to one of the 'accident repair' places and see what the deal is...I suppose this is an accident on all four corners :surprise:

Outer wings (fenders) are straightfoward to replace. If there is serious rusting, just get new ones, but remember to protect the inside with several layers of good paint.

For those contemplating a quick fix of a little rust where the fender meets the bumper, beware! Firstly, there is a shelf that connects to the bumper - this has to be intact if any meaningful fix is to be conducted. Secondly, the inner fender wall is the structural part, and if it's rust there, it need to be repaired correctly. This best done with the outer fender off.

Rust in front outer fenders (wings, ok, ok, ok...) start either from the outside (paint peels from the contact point to the bumper & start rusting) or from the inside (dirt collects on the shelf and harbours damp & this sustains rusting - like a sponge).

No matter what, any repair like new paint, wax-oyling a decent one or even fixing a small hole with body filler (ouch) is MUCH easier to do if the headlamp insert is removed. The inner fender can also be inspected, and removing dirt is always a Good Thing, corrosionwise.

Please note: Any rust repair is temporary on any car - rust will win in the end, but the more you fight, the longer it takes...

I had the same problem with my 230, but opted for fibreglass replacements. After all my 320 CLK has them OE so I'm confortable with that.

Got them from here £179 a pair ....

I am in the process of fitting them now and have not had any issues, just had to fill in the gap for the side lights as mine is a face lift. Got the drivers side fully changed and am starting the nearside.
No more will my slk (Junior) have rusty wings ....

Salt helps with rust, but it may happen anyways: If there are shelfs, nooks and crannies that collect mud or dirt, there will be ample possibilities there. Idea is, mud collects damp, damp feeds rust, mud collections never (or only slowly) get dry... So, anyone using their nice but fairly rost prone Mercedes in any kind of wet weather need to make sure that the car is clean on the underside and in all cavities where road dirt can gather.

All 4 wings/fenders were professionally derusted and repainted, rusted again in 18 months. Did them myself grinding back to bare metal then filler, Rustroy, antirust primer and aerosols and lasted about the same. Have fought rust for 53 years and never really won!

Have rust popping up on bonnet/hood, boot/trunk, wings so it’s a lot of work.

A neighbour recommended Hydrate80 as a rust destroyer, anybody used it?
