...and the next bits

Decided to cover the steering wheel button covers using some of the small off-cuts that I have left over - seems a shame to throw them away...

Like most of the SLK button covers, there are a couple of scratches from years of use, and the CF film hides them well, and matches the other bits that I've already done...

Say if you're bored and I'll stop covering things...

Anyways, not wanting to re-invent the wheel (no pun intended) I used this thread http://www.slkworld.com/general-mod...ral-modifications-r171/47065-steering-wheel-button-cover-refurb.html#post510881 from Curro to remove the button from the wheel, and the covers from the button assemblies themselves, leaving me with ...

Image

Lay the CF over and trim the edges to give you this... (having cleaned the covers with a suitable alcohol based cleaner)

Image

Cut out the button holes with a sharp scalpel, being careful not to cut into the surround...

Image

Which gives you this... one more to do

Image

Repeat for the other one...

Image

And follow Curro's instructions to refit the covers to the button assembly, and refit the pair of them back to the steering wheel...

Like so

Image

And close up of one of them as installed...

Image

You can also make out the other bits that I covered (the alluminium trims either side of the steering wheel) in the last couple of pics too

Probably a better fit than buying the kit due to being able to trim the CF exactly to match the edges of the covers and the button holes, but a little more fiddly than the kit due to having to remove them...

Simples...

Cheers
Sean

... door bits, quite subtle....

I have a couple more bits to have a go at - front grill inserts when I work out how to remove them, and one more interior piece that I'm going to try out and see what it looks like before posting.....

Just a shout out to Jeff (JBanks15) for sharing his CF for my C Pillars. Easy application and it improved the look of my car dramatically. As you all know the original C Pillars don't hold up well, and mine were looking really bad. One piece of information is that only the upper inside half of the pillar edge is subjected to a scissor movement that would pull the fiber away from the substrate. Fortunately for us that area is the easiest to trim well.

Is this a great forum or what ! :tu:

Just completed today's mod.

Rather than replace the C panel trims I decided on doing the carbon vinyl bit. Managed to sneak it in between the monsoon like rain showers in South East England today.

Rather an old mod but here it is. I have worked out how to cut the vinyl so that the 'weave' of the carbon effect runs symmetrically too.

If anyone wants a to do their pillars I have cut 5 sets and will post them to local addresses for a small consideration.

Trim before commencing

Does this material come in gloss, silk and matt and which do the members prefer?

Mine is a silk finish. The originals were gloss black but they look great now ( although hidden under masses of rain at the moment! )

Great thread. My A pillars a very weathered and I love the look of this vs. the expense of keeping them stock and having them repaired. It looks like CF can become addictive. Looking forward to trying it out!

Starting with A pillars as soon as the material comes, I can't make them worse than they are right now. :)

Dave.

Was just chatting with another member about cracks in the Vinnova (sic) steering wheel - both suffering from a few cracks. Would you recommend CF for a make over? Wondering about the all the curves and would it be slippery...
