Wiper Blade Replacement not too Challenging?

I am going to order a set of wiper blades. My car is just 16 months old approximately, but my regular windshield cleaning has turned the fronts of them a bit off color despite my best efforts. Plus, on a black car, you really notice when trim pieces like these are no longer black. ha.

The owners manual makes the wiper replacement sound a bit challenging.

However, in person, is it not such a big deal? It seems more obvious when you try, I hope!

Thanks.

This is a piece of cake. I did this when I just had had the car for 1 day because the place I got it from put the wrong kind on. The blades are expensive from the dealer just like everything else Benz. I got a set of OEM blades for $64. Autozone probably sell compatible ones for 5 bucks, who knows... Mine were paid for by the place I got the car because they screwed up, so price was not an issue.

Anyways, you push in two tabs on the blade where it slides into the arm, and the entire assembly slides right out. The new one will snap right into place. Takes 5 seconds per side. You can experiment on your old blades to see what I mean. Pushing in the tabs doesn't break anything permanently so you can slide your old blades in and out to your heart's content.

Unfortunately, many replace the whole assembly or the arms and rubbers. I like to keep everything original, so I just replace the rubbers. If you replace the works, Amazon has them for $23.

I believe the rubber inserts are standarized, and you can buy them at Wal-Mart for a couple of bucks. All you need to know is the length. BTW, they may be of different lengths.

Follow the owner's instructions on turning on the wipers, and as they are midway (vertical) on the windshield, turn the key off to keep them in the vertical position. this way you are able to pivot the wiper arms away from the windscreen and makes blade replacement easier and not damage the paintwork at the edge of the engine hood/bonnet.

Thanks all.

Just one last question.

for the $50 MSRP Set from Mercedes (my price $36 I believe) you think it has the complete blade assembly with the clip that clips back into the arm and everything?

Obviously I don't want to change the little insert as I'm changing these for cosmetic reasons.

Surely for the $50 retail price, it's the complete blade assembly with the clip and everything?

Thanks!

Yeah, the OEM blades come as the complete assembly, not just the rubber blades themselves. Everything that comes off when you push in the two tabs.

Also for blade assembly replacement you really don't have to do the entire procedure that Eddy outlined where you cut the ignition while the blades are active to get them such that you can move them all the way up without damaging the paint. I think this is also what the manual recommends but really not necessary. You can just lift the arm slightly and do the replacement, or if you must put the arm down while the blade assembly is off, just lower it carefully on a towel or somesuch. Just don't let it snap onto the windshield, that would be bad... :)

Durkatlon -

Thanks for confirming I'll get the assembly.

I'm a bit embarrassed honestly. I guess the time I had looked in the manual it seemed like so many steps.

I went out today, squeezed the two prongs, and slid one of the old ones off for practice. It went right back in. No issue, easy.

I apologize for a thread on something that is so easy, but I appreciate all the help that was confirmed! :)

Hi. I wouldn't like to start a new thread as my question is somehow realated to this one. I'm going to change windscreen wipers as current ones are totally worn out (they don't clean properly and make noise hard to stand). Which blades would you recommend (apart from going to MB and paying 4 times as much for a product which can be bought elsewhere). I'm thinkin of BOSH or VALEO. Haven't used Valeo yet but I heard that BOSH gets quicly ineffective. Has anyone ever used VALEO like these: http://allegro.pl/item997176426_wycieraczki_valeo_xtrm_mercedes_slk_171.html (site in Polish but the picture is in English so should give you a general view of it). Thx in advance for suggestions.
