Thanks, theres that horrible plastic connector in the picture, left me stranded in my other merc last year in the middle of know where when oil got in. Must remember to clean or replace when the oil is changed.

The actual Trans number is on the other side etched / engraved in a machined flat surface ................

But the trans is not the issue, AFAIK, (and I've seen a lot of 722.6) all 722.6 have the same Cooler Pipe exits on the Bell Housing, in exactly the same place, the issue is the Engine, and the Radiators etc, because the pipes run along pan level and then to the Cooler in the Radiator !!

Mercedes then compound the problem because they can only get correct parts from VIN number, and clearly in this case your VIN is no good .....................

So go back to my previous post, you need to find the VIN number for a R170 SLK, same year as yours with 722.6 Auto, and the 230 4 Cyl Engine, then you stand the best chance you got of getting the correct parts ;)

Thank you for all the advice.

I asked a question on may 8 2019 under engine re my vin.

I have e mailed the very helpful parts dept in Neyland Wales who said to me last week he had found a car similar to mine. My data card is obviously not correct and I need to look at the numbers on the engine and box.
Do you think merc in germany could shed some light on the model by giving them the order/build number ?

Hi, sorry to bore you all, I think I maybe getting my head around this cars vin, I think all 230 s were sold as manual but an auto was optional extra at around 1300 usd. This is why my vin shows a manual box (716) but under sa code (423) it shows auto box. Does this make sense ?

Thanks for the pics, my car is 300 miles away at mo but I will be checking the number if I can see it. I have contacted a really helpful guy at mercedes north wales who's firm serviced the car in 2005 and sold it in 2012, he says he will try and find the original garage who sold it in 2001 so I can contact. I am suspecting my car is a slk 200 not 230

What does it say on your V5 Reg Doc, SLK 200 or SLK 230 ???????????

Because absolutely no way that can be altered once Car is first registered ;)

I still say the issue is it was converted after leaving the factory ;)

Thank you, do not have the v5 on hand but I am pretty sure it says slk230 it's the confusion with the vin showing engine 111.958 (slk200) surely the vin is allocated at the factory so it should be 111.983 or 111.975 (slk230)

All the input very much appreciated.

It's your (incorrect) Datacard that shows the Engine, not the VIN ;)
The Datacard comes from MB FDOK, by entering VIN into software the Datacard is produced, it's an incorrect entry that is the problem here ;)

The 7th to 9th Vin Digits are nothing to do with Engine, for example my W212 E Class VIN is WDD212 203 but it's original Engine is a 250 OM651, my R170 SLK VIN is WDB170 465 but its original Engine was a 320 V6 so M112 ..........................

:ROFLMAO: I'm not exactly sure that makes it any clearer or not :ROFLMAO:

Basically the 7th to 9th Digits refer to Body Type, Model and Engine combo ;)

for easy check, on 2.0 engine the kompressor pulley is black while the 2.3 has a silver colored, smaller one. this is valid for post-facelift models with clutchless sc pulley.

Thanks guys. Will check the pulleys when next with car, it is resting now in my local pub car park.
Re my earlier post on manual gearbox being standard and auto optional extra, am I correct in this ? when I talk to any merc parts dept they all say I have a manual so I direct them to look at sa code which says auto. Does the "sa code" mean options like paint, auto box etc

Hi I have finally got to the bottom of my vin saga with the help of a very helpful lady in the "homologation dept" at mercedes. After a very long call she realised that the previous car built to mine was a lhd 2 litre slk manual sold in Portugal with the vin number ending in 2, mine ends in 3 but the guy at the computer entered my cars engine number and trans number as the previous car. Now I need to find a merc dealer to open a "tips case" to alter the details on the data card.
