wondering if you have to take the bumper and/or tires off to replace the fog lights on the slk350?

If you have the AMG sport package, I can help. I've replaced bulbs and entire fog light assembly on my 05SLK, 06SLK & bulbs on my 09SLK. They can be replaced right from the front of the bumper by removing the plastic mesh bezel that surrounds the fog light. You don't need to remove the bumper or the wheel.
If you look closely at the plastic mesh insert that surrounds the fog light you will see 3 star screws. Once you remove the 3 screws, the plastic insert slides out and you have access to the fog light. From there, I recall 3 or 4 screws holding the foglight assembly. Once you remove those screws you can manuever the fog light assembly out completely to replace it or replace the bulb.
The very first time I replaced bulbs I used the method described in a previous thread by going in via the wheel well. That was a pain in the butt. Next time I noticed the screws in the front bezels and was curious to find out what would happen if I removed the screws. The rest is "replacement fog light" history. If you don't have the AMG pkg then I have droned on and apologize.

Great info Bobby - I've done it with the wheels and liner removed - loads of room to work. I've also done it just with the front bottom engine panel removed, and it's very doable that way as well.
On the nonAMG bumper, I don't think there's any way to do it from the front - or at least it was not obvious to me.

mine isnt the AMG style, cut my arm all up replacing the drivers' side. lol
oh well, this sucks cuz these bulbs are nice, they are led's but they seem
to not work, under voltage from stock i guess is why they are flashing and my dash screen shows check fog lamps right and left, i've read you can try looping the positive wire? what exactly does that mean?

Hey jkatt - not sure what "looping the positive" is about, but if you search the forum for the electrics "know it all" sticky you can find a good discussion on using a resistor to "fix" the LED problem...

found the easy way to install and uninstall these, 2 screws on the fender
and 1 on the bottom, in front of the tires. installed back the old bulbs for now.

Awesome - can you post some pictures of how you did it? I have to replace my right front fog, and if I can avoid pulling the wheels, etc. that would save serious time!
sorry i didnt take pictures but here goes, for the drivers side, turn your steering wheel all the way to the right, there you will see the fender cover, there are 2 hex screws that you'll need to take off there i think 32mm? (im not home so i cant check that) take those 2 off, and then on the bottom of your bumber you can feel around and feel the next one,
its a different millimeter size as well, unscrew that one as well, after that
you can wedge something between the bumper and fender cover and it will pop off far enough for you to reach in there, a good 5" or more opening you can easily get both your hands in but just need one to unscrew the 9006 bulb and pinch the clamp and pull it out.
thats it, was really easy. do the same on the other side just turn your wheel the other way, just 3 screws and pop off the wheel fender.
i wish i could get these cool SMD leds' to work they look so nice, a real
white color and i dont think anyone makes a resistor/canceller unit for led's only seen them for HID bulbs.
here's the LED's that i bought to bad they dont work (just blinks and the warning msg) :

popped in some new Luminics titanium white 5500k bulbs in, they still have a halogen/yellow hue to them tho, im not sure why im so nutz about lights, each car so far ive owned ive upgraded the HID's to 10,000k on my

Well, it would be pretty trivial to calculate what resistor you need if you could find out the wattage of the LED's..

Update 3/16/2011: I use the quoted method to remove the light assembly; 3 screws on decorative panel; 4 screws to loosen the assembly. I did have to struggle a bit to get the assembly out, keep twisting it, pulling it, etc., it WILL come out. Then it's a simple process to replace with the new one. You'll need a long nylon strap to re-fasten the rubber boot to the back of the assembly to protect the electrical connection. And don't forget to plug the light in again before re-assembly like I did! DUH. I saved $130 by doing it myself.:tazz:

Hello,
I was wondering has anyone seen just the Lens for the fog lights?
I just replaced the whole assembly on my 05 SLK 350(non amg)
and it seems like a waste of money to replace the whole assembly when the glass is just broken.
I'm sure it will happen again so I'd like to find the replacement glass.

Just got around to replacing the fog lights on my 55. It couldn't have been easier. Take the cover off the front (3 #15 torx screws) and remove the light assembly with four more torx 15 screws. Pop the rubber back off, unplug it and plug in the replacement.
I bought the pair of lights off of ebay for about $120 total (now $130).

Thanks etyu, that's a good PDF. My lights must have been replaced at least once already, because they were attached in the front. So I removed the four screws and the light came right off. I didn't have to maneuver them out from behind the bracket.

I applied the Lamin-X yesterday.
On the SLK55, the fog lamp comes off forward after removing the 4 mounting screws (may be different in some R171 with AMG panels). The "clips" that serve to hold the mounting screws are on the bumper cover on the 55 rather than on the fog lamp itself.
Looking closely at the photos by Pmartel, the 4 "clips" can be removed from the fog lamp mounting holes and placed on the mounting holes of the bumper cover itself. This allows the fog lamp to be mounted from the front. With this being said, moving the fog lamp inwards into the body cavity allows more room to remove the rubber cover and also easier access to the 2 wires (more wire length), to facilitate removal and re-connection, than by moving the fog lamp outward outside the body cavity.
The film protector is best applied with the fog lamp removed from the bumper (e.g., on a work table) as there is 0.5cm "lip" that goes beyond the flat round edge. This lip is easily flexed to conform to the sides and I also left the 2 finger-hold tabs in place as they help in adherence to the sides.
The $7 USD Lamin-X foglamp protector may be worth the investment for a $70-$80 fog lamp assembly.
Edit: also replaced the lamps to Philips Xtreme H7, same colour temp just brighter output (lumens-wise).
