Great job! I moved it to the r170 diy section and stickied it

 

Here's a tip for working with those 2 nuts in the slk R170 fuse box.

1: buy a 'magnetic retrieval tool'. This is one of those tools that looks like an old telescopic radio aerial with a magnet attached at one end.

2: when working with the nuts. Loosen up with your spanner/socket of choice but before you get to the end of the thread use the magnetic tool to either unscrew the last few turns or hold it against the nut and turn off with your fingers. When reassembling the magnet can be used to place the nut onto the threads and turn it the first few turns.

If you do loose a nut the magnetic tool comes in handy anyway!

I have done several R170 installs and lost 2 nuts on the first install before coming up with the magnetic thing. Never did find those nuts ......... Just where DO they go? Looked down past the throttle assembly, inside, outside, under the carpets ???????

 

Its so funny you asked where do the nuts go... Because today i was going to clean my floor mats and guess what i found? The nut that i dropped in the fuse box from nut number 3. So unless it gets tangled in the wiring, it makes its way to the drivers side floor mats.

After reading this forum and all the positive comments I went for it!

I have built more PCs and Computer servers than I can recall, but still entered this with trepidation. :|

For right hand drive, you have to make a couple of simple assumptions as the fuse box is slightly different. The instructions are excellent, but don't attempt it if you're colour blind. It took around 2.5 hours to complete, quicker then expected.

I have to admit I was amazed that it worked first time. I am really looking forward to showing off in the summer.

I set it to 30 kph. I guess it's safe at 20 mph! What is the fastest you have tried Jeff?

It's the one function I didn't try... Unless it does something that I haven't found yet!!!

I have the older version and able to set it at a specific mph. i have it set to 32 mph
never versions just use 10 kph increments but you can exceed the setting once the process has started without error/beeping.

 

I just need another day without rain! Difficult in April in England. I'll let you know how it goes... Thanks again for your great work on the forum, I sure it is globally appreciated.

So I'm finally getting around to install mine. Great informative videos and post thunderstorm. Question, I purchased mine from mods 4 cars, plugged it in first to the USB, updated the firmware, and then read in the instructions for installing Step 12 where it says to attach the 11 supplied wire-taps (Screenshot here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/bl5nn9eq0bc56em/Screenshot 2015-06-27 08.41.21.png?dl=0 . I only received the main Smart Top piece, a connector that goes into it with 4 short wires (2 red, 2 black) and 2 long wires (1 brown, 1 red) as well a few loose connector pieces in the bag. Am I missing something? Thanks in advance

 

those 11 are for a r170 model and not yours, a r171

you have a r171. you are using the wrong instructions

Hey guys I have a few questions on this install. I've ordered mine and it should be coming in the next day or two.

It seems to me that if I use the diagram that came from Tolak listed in post #1 here that I should be able to skip steps 10-11. As I understand it the reason for steps 10-11 is to see the numbers for the various wires but if all my wires are in the expected position and with the expected colors can't I skip that part and just go straight to step 12?

What am I missing here?

I answered my own question - there is NO WAY that I could have gotten all the taps installed without steps 10-11 because there wouldn't be enough slack in that rats nest of wires to find each one...

It wasn't hard to do, but I found it a little difficult to get enough slack in some of the wires to get those taps in place...
