LED Headlight conversion

Hi
I have a 2007 R171 280 with standard halogen headlamps. These are next to useless on dipped beam, like driving with candles!
Has anyone fitted after market LED Lamps/Bulbs and are they any good? Do they work well with projector headlights? Several on E bay UK. The other option is to fit a HID kit which I fitted to my old E Class and worked well. The LED option appeals as it is just a bulb swap, relatively easy DIY remedy.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I am in the UK so right hand drive.
Many thanks Nick

Thanks for your reply's. I have got some Night Eye LED'S on Order 72w 9000LM H7 6500K, should be with me on Wednesday. My Indie has fitted these to his and his colleagues cars and rates them. I will let you know how I get on with them, they only cost £24.00 delivered so worth trying!
Thanks again Nick

Led

Will keep you up dated, not sure about the clips so will let you know. If I have any problems fitting I will be making a journey to see the clever guys at M B S near Southampton, can't recommend them enough. Yes they are the ones that Optim 8 has sent the e bay link. All the best Nick

I have LED low beams from theretrofitsource 5500K in my low beam. Only problem for using an LED H7 is finding a quality one not to overheat and also make sure to balance out the current draw with resistors if need be.
And most from ebay / china ones pack up and they send you out another one to fail months later or sooner.

If someone can reccomend a led bulb that has been on there car trouble free for more than 3 years plus and can bus friendly id buy it .

And most bulbs with many led on one bulb go out but some people dont notice it .

So whos got one still going stong and not flickering .

Quick up date
LED's arrived quicker than expected, came on the Monday not the Wednesday as expected. They appear to be good quality, the front part disconnects to allow you to fit the original retaining ring. That's the good news!
Not been able to fit them yet due to the ridiculously limited acces. You have to remove the wheel arch splash guards which will allow access to the low beam lamp holder. I think a lot of thought must have gone into making it as difficult as possible without being impossible to replace these lamp bulbs. I think they have succeeded!!
Hope to get this done later this week or early next week. When they are fitted I will give you my verdict.
All the best Nick

Thanks for the advice. I ended up doing one wheel at a time but would recommend the bumper removal method. Tight work area, couldn't figure out where to lift and use a jack stand to have both front wheels off at the same time.

Advice to anyone: Make sure the bulbs are either can bus compatible and if not, order the resistor adapter cables and clips all at the same time. Waiting for each component kept me out of the car for 3 weeks! Live and learn I guess.

Thanks to everyone who offered assistance.

Any approximate agreement on Brand and model for low beams yet?

Still reading every post I can find but it appears there's little narrowing of the brand, model, design (passive radiator heat dissipation (braids/fins) versus fans), CAN error canceling (resistors) required or not.

Any link to a good (6000k+ white, concise pattern, no errors) LED bulb on Amazon or eBay is appreciated. I'll reciprocate by documenting the DIY experience

I purchased LED kits from headlightexperts.com in CA for $99 (http://www.headlightexperts.com/carfinder/?find=2015-mercedes-benz-slk-class-w-halogen-413769). I did have to get the resistors (Headlight Experts Custom Gold Resistors/Decoders - Wiring Adapters - Lighting Accessories) and ask for the round clips for these bulbs - they sent them to me without charge after learning I needed them. I've only had them installed for 4 months but I like them - white, 6000K and warranted for life when purchased through them. Somewhat of a warm fuzzy..

Don't buy the Hi beam bulbs, they don't fit the bulb adapter on the back of the bulb - at least not on my 2006 171.

Good luck,
Barry

I installed ‘SO-Cal fanless 6400 lumens' off Amazon and was completely unimpressed. For all the hassle, the light output (lumens) seemed visually no better than the OEM Halogen I compared while driving. Their spec is not believable. They are quite white though.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01L...&sr=8-1-spons&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=socal-led+h7+fanless&psc=1

I liked the idea of fanless LEDs with high output but despite being described as "CAN bus compatible" (yes, they seemed to have resistors inline) within an hour, I received the dreded "low beam failure" warning. Later back on the garage, I also monitored the temperature of the braids with a DVM and a thermocouple, round dust cover on, and saw a 15 degree rise in 30 minutes, so out it went. The combination of 1. the "cooling braids" being really hot fast (100 degrees) and stuffed up against the back of the plastic round dust cap due to lack of space and 2. The error message, left me no choice but to send them back.

My biggest worry was that the instructions indicated the braids should be really open and elliptical, like a set of peacock feathers, obviously to optimize cooling. There's no way to achieve that with the available space between the back of the bulb and the round cap.

Old post, but I just fitted Hilox XTR Black leds in my r171. Besides not having the correct h7 adapter available, I am not really impressed with the light output. These Hilox leds ar3 supposed to be one of the best.

Thinking of going the HID route. Put some nice 4300k in. Don’t care 1bout the looks, I just want good vision in the dark.
