Is the 172 fuel tank smaller than the 171 tank?

I currently drive a 172 slk 200 kompressor. On a couple of occassions I've had the fuel gauge registering down to the bottom line, which I assume is nearly empty! :biglaugh: The car then takes around 55 litres to fill it to the brim - which is around £80 here in the UK.

Last week I picked up a 171 model of the 200 kompressor for my partner. The fuel gauge was registering halfway between the bottom and first marker on the gauge, so I assume there was several litres of fuel still left in the tank?

I was then quite surprised to see the car guzzle an extra 65 litres before it reached the brim. Thats a difference of around 15 litres between the two cars which is around £20 here in the UK

Maybe my car (172) is'nt as low as it seems when it hits the bottom of the gauge?

Yes it is - as standard I believe the 172 is 60litres* & the 171 is 70litres. There is an option for the 172 for extra capacity tank at 70litres.

*All measurements herein are approximate and shouldn't be relied on if you intend to make important journeys :biglaugh:

Cheers for the information there Becky.:tu:

I must admit, I've never heard of a car supplier offering a larger capacity tank as an 'optional extra' lol

Actually US r172 350's have 60 liter (15.8 US gallon) tanks. I don't know about the AMG 55 model.
The US r171's had 70 liter (18.5 US gallon) tanks for all models.

Owner's manual (p 309) says we have 18.5 US gal or 70.0 L.

For my USA r172 SLK 350 the owner's manual is wrong as I have only a 15.9 gallon - 60 liter tank. I'm sure of this because my 09 SLK 350 and 06 SLK 280 both had the 18.5 gallon tank and I was able to drive quite a bit further with both of those cars than I can with the r172 on a single tank of gas. And I'm getting about the same gas mileage with the r172 350 that I got with the r171 350.

Question, has anyone, anywhere who owns a r172 been able to put more than 60 liters or 16 gallons of gas in their fuel tank?

BTW, there's a new 2012 SLK Owners manual in PDF format on the mbusa site. It has a nine more pages than the original 2012 owners manual had.
But it quotes the wrong tank capacity, too.

Just checked with my dealer.. Confirmed the tank are all the same for 200 250 and 350 (not sure about 55).. They are all 60 liters tank WITH 8 liters reserve, hence when you drive your car all the way till the low fuel mark till the reserve warning shows up, you have used 60 liters of fuel and you got 8 liters left for you to search for a petrol station to top up. Thus, total fuel tank capacity is 60+8 liters. Hope this help. Jen

I don't think thats correct, it would mean when the fuel light comes on you can put over 60l & 70l into the 172 & 171 respectively. I can't recall that happening.

The 8 & 9 litres reserves on the tanks are when the light comes on.

There is a code in the german pricelist for the optional 70l tank - 915 but perhaps a US spec car wouldn't need that listing if it were standard for the market.

Easiest way to check would be run till the reserve is flagged and then see if you can put more than 60l in.

edit - it was would also be interesting to see if the 55 has the 915 code or not.

Mercedes wanted to make to r172 more "eco" so fitting a smaller tank would help reduce wait and reduce fuel consumption and co2. Sounds a bit sully but I think that is the logic after the extra option. leaving you the choice having a bigger tank or being a bit more eco.
I'm not for eco. Car's aren't men't to be eco. If you want to be eco go on foot.

I've run my fuel gauge down to the zero marker (it was just below to be exact) and left it there for several miles. I was quite worried about running out of fuel, however I only live just over 3 miles away from my work place, so had the worst happened I'd have been okay.
When I filled it back up to the brim of the fuel filler pipe I only managed to squeeze 55.5 litres of fuel in. I think it's safe to say that my car has a 60 litre tank which includes the reserve.:)

Interesting - where are you reading that? I show the same tank in all the cars for the US market (A1724700101), and an "option 915 Larger Capacity" tank available for non-US markets on all petrol models (A1724700001).

WIS shows the total tank capacity for all the US models as "18.5 US gal (70.0 l), with a reserve of Approx. 2.4 US gal (9.0 l))". No clue what the option 915 tank is! :)

If it is allowed, here is the link: Ïåðå÷åíü ðàáî÷èõ æèäêîñòåé äëÿ Ìåðñåäåñ Áåíö òèï 172

This link is very important. It has information for the other SLK models as well!

In return, vote for me at the May Ride of the month competition! :)

Buying votes?! :p

Unless my Bulgarian/Russian is off, you have two possible tanks, one 60l, one 70l, and the only model that can't have the 60l is the '55. Also, they both have the same code exclusions, which really doesn't make sense.

:) Actually, it is in Russian. You can easily translate it in perfect English if you are using Google Chrome as a browser. On the upper bar it should prompt you for an instant translation. And on the upper left corner there is a link to the home page. It is like a bible. The site is MB-Info:

I was just kidding. I don't want anything in return because this site had helped me a lot.

I'm just poking fun as well - slow night! And just as an FYI, the Chrome translation has a bit too much "butter" in it for me! :)

My 2012, 172, Automatic AMG 350 has the option 915 FUEL TANK WITH GREATER CAPACITY - VOLUME 2. on the data card.

The cars booklet manual states that 172 AMG 55 have the larger 70 Litre fuel tank.

They also state that the 8 Litre reserve is part of the 60 or 70 Litre tank capacity not extra. So not a total of 68 or 78 Litres.

What does not make sense is that I have the reserve fuel light on for about 30Kms then when I filled the tank it took 59.7 Litres ???

If I have the 70 Litre 915 FUEL TANK WITH GREATER CAPACITY - VOLUME 2 then why did the reserve light come on if I still had more that 10 Litres left??

Maybe reserve is 16 Litres on the 172 AMGs with the 70 Litre 915 FUEL TANK WITH GREATER CAPACITY - VOLUME 2?
