Yes, I know about the screen protectors. I tried one by NuShield on the old screen. I could never get it on without air bubbles.

What I'm asking is how can I avoid damage to the Original Equipment screen. What damages the coating: water, glass cleaner, etc.

 

per the owner's/comand manual, only clean with a damp microfiber cloth and that is all if I remember correctly

I ordered the nushield but wound up making my own

get phone or tablet ipad clear/frosted covers, cut to size, slide into place

 

Afaik if it's original no film but an anti-glare coating that gets easily scratched. Imho the anti-glare attribute is only there in theory so if the scratches bother you just remove it.

and claimed it worked equally well.......

 

COMAND display not scratched, progressively fogged



Pete — not scratches, but the creeping fog. When the display is on, I can only see about the left half the screen, and I’m not sure how a clear NuShield screen cover is going to fix that. I know the NuShield kit comes with a template, so I may use that to make a clear screen cover from one of my unused iPad covers.

If that doesn’t work, I’ll try to gently microfiber the fogged screen, and if that doesn’t work, I’ll try to peel the fogged cover off, pulling on one of the corners I got under my fingernail. If THAT doesn’t work, I’ll cut out a picture of Gottlieb Daimler and mount it in there.

PS: This link Sneaky Pete posted has good info & pix, and looks (I THINK — shot is a bit out of focus) a lot more like what I have going on with my screen. I’ll try to take a shot today and post it.

First, I very gently wiped the screen horizontally with a fresh, never used microfiber cloth, and that seemed to help a little. The two close-ups of the screen (power off) don’t show the fogging (lower and right edge, tapering off to the left/middle) as well as the nekkid eye (though it DOES show quite vividly what 14 years of 5 previous owners ham-fisting CDs into the slot does to the plastic fascia), but it does show the fog (the out-of-focus pink reflection to the left on the screen is my arm).

Then I turned the power on to FM. If you know it’s there — and I DO — you can still see the slight fog, but everything on the screen is sharp, with no haloing or fuzziness. I believe it’s perfectly saleable in this condition, and perhaps the NuShield/iPad screen cover solution will make the fog unnoticeable.

is what I used to clean the Comand screen in my 172 shortly after I bought the car. Appeared to have no ill effect on the magic coating and, despite having several fingerprints and some suspect spotting, screen looked 'as new' immediately after cleaning.
