Hello all & R171 Windscreen install issue

Hello and thanks to all for this great board ; I found a lot of useful info on here.

I just got my SLKStore OEM R171 mesh windscreen and am having an issue installing it on my '09 SLK 350. The buttons on the windscreen don't seem to want to go on the pins on the arc behind the seat. Am I supposed to force them on, scratch/sand the pins so it fits, etc... ? Any suggestions/advice is appreciated. Thank you!

Sure. It is much harder the first couple times, first time being the most difficult.

I hope my tips will help.

First thing, put the cords on first that go on the hooks behind the seat. With the cords around the hooks behind seat, make sure middle of the wind screen is tucked behind the glove box next to the seats.

Second step is then to then one at a time, do the hook pins thing on the side of roll bars. DO not pull the windscreen up over the roll bar yet.

So yes, go ahead pull around the pin thing to the pin, pull up on the them and push it on the pin, releasing pressure, when it's fully pushed on there, so it will lock. Then do the other side.

Finally, after all this, again first the cords are hooked, it's tucked in behind the center glove box, and then the pin snap things are done on the lower sides, then pull the rest of the windscreen up onto the roll bars.

I hope that might help.

These steps make it pretty easy for me now though it is a bit more worn, but I think you can do it!

Yes, the pin depresses and there are little "teeth" inside the button that recede however, the issue is the opening on the button; the "hole". The rounded pins on the roll bar are just too big in diameter to fit inside. I tried, with force, and have only succeed in shaving the pin off a bit. Maybe the pins changed for 2009 or maybe I have some sort of special SLK  ?

Try test fitting it first (without assembling the screen) on the pin located at the side of the triangular hoop ("noggin protector"). IIRC, you have to sort of pull on the button (to loosen the spring clamp) on the mesh screen as you insert it unto the pin.

Be careful to not use excessive force or you'll break off the pin.

The pins on the roll bar are the male part, the receptacles on the screen are the female parts.
The female part has to be handled properly by first lifting the spring loaded head and letting it settle over the male pin; releasing the head will lock the female part on to the pin.

Yes, I understand that the button has a spring that you have to pull/lift, and I did exactly that. The issue is that the male pins are too big in diameter for the female "button".

These are rough estimates, but please bear with me. If the pins are 4mm in diameter and the female part is 3mm (it's a metal button), it simply won't fit on.

Maybe the pins changed on the 2009 SLK, I'm not sure, but the screen I was sent definitely doesn't fit.

Like I said earlier, I tried to force it on but only succeeded in shaving the plastic off of one of the pins.

I sent the windscreen back; I'm sure the slkstore can make it right.

DSG & SLK World - That screen button does not look like the wind screen that came with my 2009 SLK.

I don't think it would go on my car either.

I'd recommend trying to find an updated part number.

Oh, wait, I think I have the part number in my trunk. I'll try to post it tomorrow. I have the plastic bag mine came in with part number.

A1718600274 is the R171 Net, from chassis date 06/29/2007

There is also a listing for a "Take up Device, Draft Stop to Roll Bar" that looks like a glorfied screw in the diagram, part number A1718680156, from chassis date 06/29/2007

I don't see anything else listed...

The windscreens really do help... the OEM mesh version certainly reduces the amount of wind, but restricts visibility (especially at night) if you leave it in place. I bought a clear WindRestrictor version (as Jeff says, they offer a forum member discount), and that stays in place permanently, and doesn't impact rearward visibility at all... I'm very happy with it! :tu:
