The pump in the pictures show as white and black, is it two parts?
Depending on whether your car has the headlight washers there will be up to two different pumps. Your issue is with the windshield washer pump which is the black pump as shown in your post 57 that included a bunch of pictures. The last picture with the black pump is the one.

If you are doing the replacement alone then you will be challenged to use tools and such while keeping your thumb over the draining washer fluid. If you have a helper one of you will need to use your thumb to keep from losing the fluid. Of course, a good ole cork of the correct size would do to. Otherwise, use a clean catch container and when done pour it back in through a small mess strainer to make sure you don't get dirt in the wash bottle. Fresh is not necessary but might be helpful if you don't have a container to catch or a strainer to pour it through.

Time to jump in and let us know how it goes.

Thanks, Durkatlon, this was extremely helpful. I needed to replace the washer pump and I also wanted to remove the tank to inspect the area behind it. I could not figure out how to remove the tank until I saw in your post that the filler neck is removable.

The black plastic strap was also broken and it was going to take several days to get another, and I couldn't wait that long. I discovered that the strap material is a thermoplastic, which meant that it could be melted with a soldering iron. So I overlapped the strap at the break and thermally welded it together. The tank has two attachment points at one end that enabled the shortened strap to be used.

Thanks again for the detailed instructions and pictures.

Hey guys, I went to buy a new bottle using the part number embossed in the side, due to a broken pump retention strap which causes a poor seal on the pump leading to a bad leak. Mercedes says that the original bottle part number has been superceded... (?)
I'm looking for the correct one (171-860-00-60) but none of the online parts stores have the "no heater, no headlight washer" bottle... Even with the new part number reference.
Any ideas on getting the correct bottle part online for cheap?

After reading this whole post, I might try to repair the pump retention strap with a solder iron, and get the pump to seal better with teflon tape and silicone... We'll see!

DIY FTW!

See my post of 7-28-18 in this thread. I successfully repaired the strap with a soldering iron that had an extra wide tip. You can also use any similar plastic, most of which are thermoplastics that can be melted, as additional filler to improve the strength of the repair. You definitely want to remove the tank to repair the strap.

Bought a heavy duty solder gun, and went at this repair. Used the heat to fix the broken strap (in the middle) and re attach it to the bottle, too. Worked great.
The pump was still good, but used clear silicone around the gallery and used the silicone to "glue" it to the bottle securely.
Works like a champ now!

Only problem is that somewhere I'm missing the red fender bolt that attaches the filler neck to the inner fender! Probably got kicked and now hidden in the depths of my garage somewhere...Ugh.

Anyone know the part# code to order that single bolt, or have a junk one lying around they could ship to me (I'll happily pay for it)?

Love this forum!!
