hello peps.

What i read the r170 -98 is ODB1?
i have a reader that can read ODB2 i belive...

When connected it can read and tell me that there is fault codes.. but i cant see what the codes are..
when trying to read codes it just tells med it cant connect.

Soo i belive the tool cant read odb1.

Its a Icarsoft CR pro.

It says mercedes but maybe not that far back in time.

Soo anyone knows a tool to read odb1 system?

Best regards Thomas.

Hi,

That's above my level I'm sorry to say, i860 is da man hopefully, I'm useless with software stuff like that :frown:

Personally I'd just give the seller a call, they will usually have it fixed in short order over a Team Viewer,

HTH, Cheers Dave

Hi,

If you want "current affairs" try waiting to see how @M4rCu5 gets on as there is no better way to test an EBay seller than when you have a problem

https://www.obdstore.co.uk/product/mb-star-c3-mercedes-diagnostics-system/

I'm not recommending them in any way, but I am still very happy with a JLR SDD and a Peugeot / Citroen Lexia that I bought a fair while back .....................

There entry level C3 Based system is ÂŁ399, and if you have Pre Facelift Car you will need to buy the 38 pin plug lead on top ;)

Also you could pm @i860 he may well be able to help you a lot more than me

Hi @efair ,

In a nutshell yes, both Pre and Post Facelift Cars use HHT Win for certain modules.

C3 Based and C4 Based works fine on both Cars, most software has the HHT Win according to @i860 he has it working on a 2019 IIRC ??

Edit: I didn't IIRC lol, it was 2018 see below ;)

HHT Win switches over automatically from DAS, when needed, and these days for the older tech Cars which need DAS, the DAS switches in automatically from when you select your Model etc in XEntry !!

I did read somewhere that newer software has to switch to DAS from XEntry, thia may be exactly what @M4rCu5 is seeing, as he appears to be able to get into his Car via XEntry, which sees the older tech and switches to DAS etc etc !!

On R170's it is modules like PSE, ICM, CCM, RF/IMMO, VR, ATA etc etc which all need to use HHT Win

There is a total (Car spec dependent), of approx 17 modules on an R170 :wink

HTH, Cheers Dave

Hi @M4rCu5 ,

Glad you've sorted that one out

So are you ready yet to get a couple of freebies with some simple Version Coding ???

If so I'll try and do a little how to tomorrow for ATA Chirp upon Arm / Disarm and for Speed Sensitive Wipers

Oh and also for those with IMS, the factory set it's coding so it doesn't work with roof down, which to me is just plain dumb assed, I would argue that the whole point of an IMS is to protect your Car from a 'thieving scumbags' hand entering the Cabin area with the Roof down ;)

Cheers Dave

Well .. I've kinda figured all of those out 'cos me and the '6 spent a couple of hrs together yesterday, you & i860 were not joking about the need to hook up the battery to a charger, glad I did that so thanks to both :tu:

Can't do the 'Netherlands' mode due to no siren :)

Speed Sensitive Wipers already armed, tho' I found that in settings somewhere :tu:

Found the IMS and a few other bits and bobs that I don't even have - seat buckle warning light springs to mind for one and I know there was others

So .. I have a big 'F' for no siren connected ..

.. and a big 'F' because I have a W210 HVAC control unit - SDS just being puristic there, something to do with the internal cabin temp sensor but it all works so apparently this big 'F' "fault can be ignored" .. gee thanks SDS!

Also found a fair few little 'f's which I've cleared and I don't know what I've done but it seems to go a lot better, was good before but it took me by surprise a bit when out roadtesting and I hit the kickdown. I got a genuine WTF? moment  >:D

My conclusion is that SDS is a nice bit of kit but it's not something that can be learned in a couple of hrs. 4hrs in simulation, 2hrs on a car (so far) and I know I've only skimmed the surface :nerd:

Hi @M4rCu5 ,

Thanks for all the feedback, keep it coming, glad your happy with it after I kept changging on about it's virtues.

Yes, I have been using SDS for many years now, on many many different MB Models, and I still keep finding more cool stuff

There is no substitute for "time in the saddle" with this machine

Cheers Dave

the tool is pretty good.
Hi,

I'm very sorry to disagree, and in no way am I trying to be confrontational, it is just that I do all diagnostic and rectification works on all Cars and LGV's all day long ;)

Like many other tools, the iCarsoft tool is not "pretty good" you just think it is for what could be several reasons, one of which is because they are oversold by both folks who own them but are not as knowledgeable as they think with regards to the minefield within Cars which are "Rolling Computer Networks", also by salespersons that have no idea what they are selling and why it will lead it's operator "up the garden path" ..............

SDS is the only tool that will access all Modules, all Codes and all Data, but it doesn't end there, SDS is waaaaaay more than just a "Reader / Resetter" ;)

I am not going to type chapter and verse, done it too many times, if you search around you will find some very informative stuff on this and other Forums, by myself and many others.................

This very thread contains 2 examples from guys who bit the SDS bullet in recent times .............
@Mslisaj bit this very Bullet recently, and she has extensive knowledge of working on multiple makes using regular OBD Machine (s), but she has grasped SDS very quickly and can testify to the power of this $500 machine, nothing else even comes close ;)

A lot of my work is sent to me by many other Garages in the area, who have way better equipment than ICarsoft and similar but most Garages do not have Dealer Level Equipment !!

I now own Dealer Level Kits for around 15 different popular Marques that travel on the roads, plus 3 really good "Workshop Quality All Makes" Generic machines, and so far, in my many years I have never failed to fix any Vehicle..........................
And yes, even someone like me learns something new every day and the newer the Cars the more of a Bear we are wrestling with ;) .........................

But the R170 is an older and simpler Car I hear a lot of guys say ................

Well yeah, older it is, but MB have always been the pioneers, so a 10 year old MB has technology that some Mfrs are only just fitting today................
And also the R170 is kinda unique, it is not just Modules all talking over CAN Bus / LIN Bus, it is a mixture of CAN and also Relays / hard Wiring which makes a lot of faults much harder to deal with until you get to know your way around an R170, this applies more so to both the Pre & Post Facelifts for different reasons, these R170's are kind of an "Inbetweener" ;)
I came here with a huge knowledge of C, E, CLK, CL, and S Class Cars plus Vito's and Sprinters but I soon learned that my 2002 V6 R170 is similar in many ways, but also a very different animal and yet another steep learning curve.

My 2 cents.
iCS MBII (or v2 for that matter) I would describe as "adequate for most situations" - it works well for such things as wheel speed sensors, yaw and lateral acceleration sensors, brake switch sensors etc. But it is what it is, it's basic and limited in which systems that it can talk to and to what information that it can acquire - something to keep in the boot of your car along with other adequate "get you home tools" - Your better, bigger, more expensive and more comprehensive tools, you leave at home for the serious work ..

/\ /\ /\

I Couldn't agree more, I've always agreed that if you have an iCS then yes, it is a nice compact tool to keep in the Car and will read and reset the basic faults in some of the Modules ;)
