Ok,

So I was looking at the options for purchasing the cubby hole replacement for my cupholder, but I decided to come up with something myself.

So, Here's what I did.

Removed the entire cupholder and casing from the car. Took out the two screws and pulled the whole thing out.

Then Popped out the cupholder tray from the casing.

Now I set about removing everything so the cupholder was just a shell,

Now that I have my empty tray that will pop in and out I went and got two old DVD's for their cases.

I created a template in photoshop for the layout of the cupholder shell to use as a flooring. The template is linked at the bottom of this post.

I used my template to print out on a piece of paper and cut it out.

I then took that and traced around my clean half of a DVD Case, I used a blue pencil.

I took some heavy sissors from an old knife set and started to cut the template shape out of the DVD Case Back.

*The case will need some fine tuning with sissors, or an exacto beyond the template but it gets you very close.

Once I had my hard black bottom I just slid it in place to check to make sure it was a good fit.

Now I wanted to create a back so that loose items wont fly out the back.

I grabbed another DVD Case and made a rectangle that is 6 7/8" wide, x 1/2" tall to use as a back wall. This piece sits at about a 50degree angle so it's pretty good.

At this point I'm gonna stop for the night but my next plans are to superglue my floor and back down to the tray, then, fit it with some felt or thin fabric to give it a seemless look and muffle the sound if it's used for change.

Then, I'm planning on drilling a whole in the back of the tray and casing and bringing an ipod cable through so I don't have to keep it in my glove box.

I've tested it and the pop in / out feature still works perfect.

I'll post final pics of it finished out as soon as I get some sleep and get it finished.

This is a pretty cool weekend mod. Although like Mo I use the cup holders for coffee, cold drinks don't really work with the drippy condensation (great engineering :) ) speaking of coffee has anyone found a good insulated mug that fits snugly in the holder? insulated would probably work well with hot and keep condensation down on cold drinks as well.. I am currently using one we made for gifts at work it fits ok but I would like to find one with a more grippy (is that a word :)) surface for the cup holder to maintain a good hold on.

If there was another cupholder in the car I would definitely do this mod as there is not a good place for my Ipod touch with the disk changer taking up the whole glovebox.

Sorry to revive such an old thread, but how exactly did you pop the assembly from the casing? I have an extra cupholder that's kinda stuck and I couldn't find any way to open it up without destroying the casing or parts of it first...

Also, how did the project end? I'm interested in doing something with mine.

Once you remove the screws holding the Cup holder assembly in place and remove the cup holder, there is a flat spring hooked into a slot on the top. You will need to dislodge the spring to pull the tray out, it is also held in place by a small pin retainer. I will post some pictures as soon as i can.

Very creative. I use the cup holder for coffee or water. I use those little insulated cup cozies (dollar tree-$1.00) on my water bottle/soda so no dripping from condensation. I found that coffee cups can't be too tall because they hit the mirror when taking them out to drink.

Okay, I am getting mad. My "search" doesn't come up with anything on how to open the outer case. I got the spring out and the gear thing on the bottom off. Now what? I need details. I normally can figure this stuff out but can someone please place the link on details on how to gut out this thing!?

The drawer is held into the "case" by two tabs and the end of the drawer. Once the entire assembly is removed from the car, you have to firmly press one side in towards the other as you pull the drawer out of it's housing. It's not easy, but then all of a sudden it will pop out completely. From there, you just start pulling out all the little mechanisms until it's nothing but a skeleton of a drawer. I hope that makes sense. :D
