I just had my pads and rotors changed and they reused the old sensor and the light has not gone off. So I will buy a new replacement sensor but as typical I have been given 4 different answers to how many sensors are on my SLK 280 non performance model. I was told 1, also and also 4. General concensus its one sensor on the right front tire. I want to order these myself since they OEM sensors are much cheaper online that dealer or shop.

Thanaks all

If you supply an MB or recognised Indy with your vin they can get the correct part.

Or

You can post your vin on site and one of the gifted can look up the part number for you.
Then you can order it from wherever you wish.

If you provide me your VIN I can confirm, but it does look like only one on the front (part number 211 540 17 17). There are some models that have one or more on the rear, but this is where I would need your VIN to make sure yours does not fall into that group.

Oh man, we got brake pad sensors too? I got R172, knew about speed sensors on brakes but didn't know there was pad sensors too. I wonder if that is what the 2 weird looking flat star bolt like things are on the front calipers (I have no idea), there are 2 on each caliper. Was planning on installing ceramic pads but looks like I'm going to need some info on this now with all these sensors. I was hoping for just removing and swapping pads, only 10K on car.:frown:

For both the R171 and the R172 the sensor simply slides into a small hole in the pad material near the metal backing plate. There are no bolts holding it to the pad. If the car has only 10K miles then I would reuse the sensors that you have. Make sure the replacement pads have the hole. The R172 with the 350 engine has one sensor on the front and one on the rear wheels.

I had new pads and rotors installed all around last week and a local shop I have used for years. The Akebono pads did not come with a sensor so before ordering one they wanted to check to see if they could reuse the original which does not appear to be the case since its plugged in and the screen says brake wear. I have new sensor so I just need to get it swapped out. Was hoping I could do that myself but after looking the tire will need to come off.

Not sure. I got Akebono front and rear pads and brembro rotors. Sensor did not come with any of the pads. A replacement sensor was $7 on Amazon so just ordered another one. Is there a reset for the brake wear light? Or does it just go out when a good sensor is installed?

I believe it goes out when it detects a 'new' pad (thickness)
I asked my guy if anything needs resetting putting on new pads/rotors and he stated, the sensor does not know we did anything :D

My wear sensor was never on fyi

RockAuto.com has the sensors for about $4. The sensor has a small probe that goes into the brake pad material. It will trip the light when the brake pad has worn to the point that the probe makes physical contact with the brake rotor which it can do when the brake pad material is worn away. The probe is the negative side of the light circuit so when it makes contact with the brake rotor that completes the circuit to ground (the negative side of the circuit) and causes the light to come on. A new sensor has the probe covered in plastic. This plastic is worn away when the pads are sufficiently worn and once the plastic is worn off the metal probe inside the plastic can make contact with the brake rotor. Hope this is helpful.
