Sounds a bit dodgy if both VINs have been damaged - especially the one behind the windscreen????

Did you get a V5/log book, or receipt for MOT - the VIN should be on one of those.

Yes, dodgy at first. I purchased the car as a stolen recovered with no V5. On collection the seller, a dealer, provided copy of his passport, receipt and showed me details of his business - a recovery company.

The car was stolen recovered and the vins had been tampered with. I now have the V5 and this shows me the VIN number that I need to check is on the car and will order new ones from Mercedes once the car is repaired. There is no MOT as the car has been off the road for a while.

Have contacted mercedes and they can order VINS with the V5 and ID.

other than windshield and/or door plate or inside hood near engine plate or rear bumper, that should be it

Does anybody know if there is a way to determine the Chassis Number for a euro-spec R170 from outside the vehicle? I'm trying to research a vehicle that I'm seeing out on a used car lot and don't have access to the interior.

I know this is an old thread, but figured it may be more appropriate to post here than start a new one.

It's usually on a little plate in the bottom corner of the front windscreen.

I checked both there (in the same location the VIN is on U.S. cars) and on both A-pillars but there's no plate or engraved number. I figured they just hide it somewhere else for a European car. Are chassis numbers normally visible from the exterior?

Any other ideas? If I can't locate it, I'll just have to contact the seller.

Unfortunately, I'm European, but luckily I'm a Brit - The Brit cars have them behind the windscreen in the bottom corner.

 

Post your vin in the data card request section
I think the datacard has chassis number on it
Look in that section at other members datacards n see

 

Thanks jbanks15. I'm actually looking for the european equivalent of the VIN, which I've seen referred to as the chassis number. I'll just get in touch with the seller, but I'll have to wait until Tuesday due to some holidays over here.

 

In USA. We get the vin etc prior to sale for our insurance/loan paperwork

 

also rear bumper near the bottom (passenger side on usa cars)
