R171 Cabin Fan UK.

Hi been looking to find a reasonably priced cabin fan for my SLK350. tried the usual google searches and e-bay. Has anyone managed to find a cheap supplier?
I'm in no rush as the fan still works but is quite noisy at high speed.

Thanks Mark

If it's not hard to get access to it a little bit of proper grease (not WD-40!!) can make huge difference and give you more time. I just checked yt and it seems to be 20 min job to get the fan on the table.

I would try "3 in 1" brand oil, specific for electric motors. I've used it in the past and a noisy fan shaped right up. You may have to live the smell inside for a little while but it's quicker and cheaper than replacing the fan.

Is it bearing noise or another sound. Don't rule out something stuck in there that might be hitting the fan.

Hi Thanks for your replies. I had it checked out by my indie when I had the instrument cluster repaired, apparently there was no debris. But I'll check myself.
To me it sounds like the fan is catching on something.
Cheers Mark

You can access the blower from both sides. The top through the battery compartment and the bottom by removing the inside air filter. May want to just pull it out and do a thorough inspection of it.

Thanks to the guy for that vid as my fan making a loud noise at 1 & 2 setting but quietens as the fan speeds up. Took it all apart today using the vid and its obvious someone has done that previously as the awkwards screws to get to were missing. Sanded the base of the compartment where there were some scratches, cleaned the base of the propellor part of the fan, oiled and re-assembled. All pretty quiet now but the fan was in pretty poor shape so will need a replacement maybe in the future.

Worst part was trying to re-locate the fan compartment in the correct place when re-assembling. Eventually sorted by putting in the centre screw first, then the yellow clip as you only have to hold up the back of the unit in the footwell to locate the other screws. If my knees and back were not messed up before that job they are now.

Send a message via Skype™ to D G Ford
I had to replace my cabin fan about 6 months ago for SLK350 for being noisy. Like yours mine looked pretty bad and I did all the cleaning oiling etc but it did not make much difference so I bit the bullet and decided to replace it. I looked hard (eBay, reconditioned, deals breakers yards etc)for a good price but there was no choice other than to buy a new one at the full price. Anyhow fitting it was a bit awkward but straightforward and it is now beautifully quiet.

I ended up replacing mine about 6 months ago after it went from making intermittent screeching noises to being a steady screech. I ended ordering a new fan on Amazon. The regular cost locally(US) was about $600 as I recall. The one I got was shipped from Latvia(I had to look that one up on the map) but was only about $120. I was nervous about ordering from so far away but the fan that arrived was a good fit and works as good as new(because it was a new item). I did need to trim the fan blades a tiny bit with a Dremmel to make it slightly more quiet. Also you should note that it is a tight fit accessing this project. Expect to have your head, arms and upper torso jammed up pretty tight in that passenger side footwell as it's a pretty tight fit for anyone of a large build. Good luck, I hope this helped!!

I had a similar loud rumble noise from the fan when the settings were on high, so rather than take everything apart I used a lithium spray grease with a straw and went at the fan through the battery compartment. A few well aimed squirts did the job and now my fan runs smoothly. I do this now as part of my monthly maintenance program to keep things running free. It's certainly worth the little effort for a big reward.
