More authoritative horn

My 2005 SLK 350 has a really puny sounding horn. Has anyone found a good substitute either from Benz or in aftermarket?

Windraker,

Welcome to SLKWorld.com: The #1 Mercedes-Benz SLK Forum from Valrico, Florida!

Please update your location/vehicle (model and year) in your profile as it helps the members answer your questions which usually are based on that information.
‘Usercp’ at the top left of page, then ‘edit your details’ on the left side, ‘additional information’ near the bottom, edit your ‘location’ and ‘vehicle’. And it only takes about 30 seconds to do!

You might want to post an introduction in the ‘New members introduce yourself here’ section, if you haven’t already.

Some tips to make your visit here more enjoyable:

If you haven’t, please use the 'search' feature at the top right of the page for your questions as they have probably been asked before. Remember, ‘Search’ is your friend.
In addition, if you haven’t, please post your question in the appropriate discussion forum for a quicker response and only once. Be patient and a knowledgeable member will address your question.
If you wish to become PM (Private Message) - capable, you need 15 posts. To get those 15 posts quickly, just go to the ‘New members introduce yourself here’ section and welcome enough new members to obtain your needed posts to PM.
New members should be aware that the 'New Posts' link next to the 'Search' link top right of the info bar is a great way to see all of the posts you have missed since you were on the forum last. Remember to click 'mark forums read' under ‘quick links’ when you leave.

I do a quick double tap to be polite. If I want to be annoying I'll keep my hand on the horn. If I'm pissed off I'll honk, make a hand gesture, and/or mouth out some words. I wouldn't waste my time or money on changing the horn.

you need a Stebel Nautilus. They run at 139dB. They're made in Italy (beware of the cheap crap on Ebay).

If you're really serious check out train horn (on cars) vids on Youtube but I think that's going a tad too far.....

I've got a couple of sets of Fiamm metal-trumpet air horns knocking around somewhere. I agree with the OP that the standard kit is puny. What I've done on previous cars is piggy-back the air horns to the existing horn. Because the pump and tubing takes a while to reach full pressure, a tap on the button only sounds the standard kit, but held down emits an almighty blast.
I'm thinking it would be a struggle to find a space for them though. I had a set on my Norton Commando when I was a kid - very useful.

Coincidentally, I have a 72 Norton Commando Combat that I bought new and kept. The horn was very feeble so I put a car horn on the bike. About a year later I met a wisened old biker (a future me?) whose sage advice I have heeded ever since: "If you need to use your horn; use your brakes instead and you will live longer and be happier". I put the stock horn back on and have not used a car or bike horn in traffic since 1973. Horns really are a nuisance, don't really help as much as brakes and I have been happier and still alive so far.

PS Periodically, I push the button to hear they still "honk" and are still annoying.

I was 17 when I had my Mk2A, and the hooters were solely for annoying people and making pedestrians get the hurry-up. These days, I'd still prefer the ability to make kids, nerds with iPods and grannies be aware that although I'm braking, they'd do well to pay attention to oncoming traffic. Did that 'wisened old biker' have a beard? - Yeah, I thought so...
