Parts required for Front pads + Rotor change

Just finished my Service B at the dealer. They said my front brake pads are down to 3mm and recommend a change. They want $3000 for front brakes alone!!! The advisor was trying to tell me that there's some electronics with these brakes which sounds totally bogus to me... Pads are pads right?

Anyways, if possible, can someone post the part(s) number for a 2005 SLK55 front brake and rotor change. I would like to stick with genuine Mercedes parts because those are some good brakes to start with... Don't want to mess with it.

I have after market rotors and pads on my 350. As long as you fit a good brand they are just as good as those from MB. All your paying for is the name. They are probably made for MB by one of the big manufacturers at source. The only electronic parts am aware on the actual pads are the wear sensors and they are hardy high tech. 3000 dollars is a ridiculous amount of money. My front rotors and pads fitted were UK 250 ( 400 Can) Find an independant MB shop. MB just rip you off for servicing

Thats a disgusting price Jeff. Thats four times what I paid for mine at my Indy's Even if the MB parts are better which I doubt, I am sure they dont offer four times the breaking power or four times the life !

Regular 350 price in my case but even AMG after market parts would be a fraction of that Plus paying MB dealer labour rates is madness. They quoted my Son in Law 4 hours labour to do his tracking at 110 UK per hour. It was done by an Indy on a full laser machine for 25 UK. I had a full suspension and front and rear tracking on my Mx5 for 100 UK and and done by a specialist rally workshop. I am not a main dealer fan as you can gather LOL

Eric, suggest you price out the parts at Napa US, autosource US, etc...

Where did you get that price - STAR? Did you try the guy in little italy?

Search brakes under DIY. I'll be doing mine in the spring now, Eric Sr has offered to help...maybe we could make a weekend of it - many hands etc..

GBarringer...can you wade in buddy? I'm rushing around and don't have the time to look up all the info people have sent me.

The brakes on a 350 and on the AMG 55 are very different and the prices are very very different. A 55 is about 50% to 100% more than a 350 or 200's.

Still a hell of a lot cheaper to buy a branded make such as ferodo or mintex than pay MB inflated prices in my opinion. Mintex are under 100 UK a pair of discs Brembo pads 38 UK

I did the front pad/rotor + rear pad change on my 350, and there was/IS no electronic roadblock(SBC). Not sure if the 55 AMG has SBC, but if not, it is a very easy diy(do a fluid change/flush also), again, on a 350.

the rotor of the slk55 prerestyling 340x32 and the performance 360x32 are very expensive because they are "separable" rotors.

if you don't want to give so much money you can take a "normal" brembo amg rotors 345x30 (actually is mounted to the slk 55 restyling with 4 piston calipers) and it works excellent also with the 6 pistons calipers of the 55 amg prerestyling/performance model.

it cost 300Euros the pair and not like 1400 euros ofr the separable rotors.

ciao

Yea I was looking onling for genuine MB parts and found the round, pads, some brake backing for around $1200USD... I didn't know about the brake pads sensors and I didn't add that into the calculation. It's crazy because I'm looking on Tire Rack and I can get a Brembo BBK 345mm 4 piston for $3000... the 380mm 6 piston for $4000k..

I am also getting close to needing frt brakes on my slk55, do I read this correct...I can replace the prestyling(mine being an 06) brake parts with the newer less expensive style?
Has anyone done this? or have any input on this? also maybe some #'s on the rotors so I can tell if they need replaced?

Called these folks and got these part numbers fpr my 06 SLK55....
http://www.mymercedesparts.com/
Frt pads 0054203920
Frt rotor 1714210112
Frt sensor 1715400617
If I add correct it is a tad over $1250 for the parts.

Still waiting for the confirmation and maybe a little more information on using non floating rotors.

yes this is correct.
if you have the 6 piston old style caliper you can use the normale 345x30 rotor and not the expensive 340x32 rotor

the 340x32 expensive rotor has number A1714210112

the 345x30 rotor has part number A2034210912

Thank you for that information.
Do I then still use the stock 06 SLK55 pads? p/n 0054203920 ?

Will I notice any reduced performance? Or should I ask will I notice any reduced performance in normal driving conditions as this is not used to it's full capacity.

You could always try Eurocarparts. They ship all over the world. Although I should think it'll be quite expensive shipping the actual discs across the pond as they weight a lot!

http://www.eurocarparts.com/brake-pad

http://www.eurocarparts.com/brake-disc

Prices in GBŁ. You'll have to work out what that is in your own money.

Aftermarket options

I also need to replace pads and rotors soon. I am considering the Evosport 2 piece rotors that should be available in 3-4 weeks. They claim to be significantly lighter.

I would consider lighter rotors but since I'm not tracking the car, the benefit of lighter rotors wouldn't benefit me as much. Thanks for the part number!
