I need another R171 key FOB. Does anyone know the cost through MB parts and what's required for coding. I know the slide out key would have to be cut. Is it possible to buy used and re-code? I remember this previously being mentioned months ago. Search results returned zero.
If i where you i would go for the new one feels much more soild i am getting them for both my MB's because i like the feel of the key way more.
You can't re-code since they are given the right info at the factory and it cant be erased, you dont need the dealer to do anything to code unless you want an old key deactivated then they can do that for you.
To activate a new one have a delaer order the part numbers against your VIN so MB know what car it is you will need to show them a few different sets of ID, the computer might say the new style key is wrong but if you want it tell the dealer to over-ride it and continue on MB don't mind what one you pick once you have the key and the blade put it all together pick what colour tab you want you use and all that once thats done unlock the car using a current key then place the new one in the EIS for 10 seconds then turn it forward one click and wait again then one more click and wait once you have done that fire the car up with the new key give it a few seconds then shut it off remove the key and lock the car with it.
10 seconds is more than enough time at each stop it takes more like 1/2 but its best to wait longer because if you remove the key while its being programmed you will ronnie it.
Keys cost next to nothing but dealer add mark up to them so shop around you should be able to get them at more like $100
talking about keys, I love how one of my loaner C230's key looks.
It has the metal (like?) trim on both side of the fob. Is it possible that I can order one of those from MB or is it possible to change the housing of the fob onto ours?
Because we have the EU EPC i was unable to close right in on the exact key but from experince i am 99% sure this is the correct unit, the computer says its current, its in the 171 list as supported parts, it has the US frequency option and the panic button on it.
Tell the dealer you are odering it as an extra spare not as a replacement.
Key - A2117663606 (New shiney type!)
Blade (To date - 31/05/06) - A2037660106
(From date - 31/05/06) - A2037665006
:tu: Thanks DansSLK and Ynot for the key fob information. Now we all know. Not sure I'd pay extra for the shiney fob. I'm just a regular Joe who drives a SLK.
I have been reading those threads and it sounds like a lot of iffy information if you ask me.
I can get the key in the UK along with the fob for just over 100 GBP and just for a test i have had a look at some other MB parts outlets also and you should not expect to pay more than $50-100 at the most for the new key and blade from OEM Parts Direct the estimate was $70 for it all.
That £100 is not using trade discount by the way so that is the price the dealers are selling for in the UK and stuff is more expensive over here anyways.
So is there a cheaper way to get one? A direct place that will be able to code it? Anyone have a great dealer that they recieved one resonably.
