replacing auto dimming interior review mirror by manual dimming mirror

My auto dimming interior mirror doesn't work anymore. I want to replace it by a manual dimming one. Just as easy and no more auto dimming problems anymore. To completely remove the auto mirror I have to cut the electric wire of the auto dimmer. I don't want to remove the headliner to reach the connector.
I just want to be sure there won't be any alarm bells, red panic dash lights, error codes on my EOBD scan tool, exploding airbags, flat tires, rattling chains etc. etc. as result of my cutting the wire.

Has anyone done this before??

I also have a fifties classic car. That's different stuff, talking about easy!!!!

Yes I have done this and cut the wire(s) that powers the mirror with no issues. The replacement manual mirror from Mercedes looks almost identical just a little thinner and no wires. Thanks!

Well, that's just what I wanted to know. I've got the manual dimming mirror already, so it's just a matter of cutting the wire and replacing the manual one.

Removing the old one was quite tricky. I tried to turn the mirror 90 degrees clockwise putting a screwdriver in the hole at the back. But only after using much force I managed to loosen it. I got real sweaty.

Thanks for your reply.

Greetings from Holland.

Charles, so glad to hear things worked out! Changing the mirror made me nervous too because I thought I was going to break the post in the windshield glass. But everything worked out nice.

Here is a picture of the Mercedes manual rear view mirror. Without getting into the pros and cons of rear view mirror replacement - this solution is a nice one for those of us who don't want to worry about it going bad again.

Cheers!

Did you disconnetct the battery? I'd rather not. I'll have to reset my radio again. If you did so, I'll do it as well. I don't want screaming horns, popping up hoods, opening doors, blinking interior lights. vibrating chairs etc... I hate all that rubbish on cars these days. I just have to learn to live with it. But never the less, I love my SLK.
Just for fun, look at Youtube: "Why not to buy a Mercedes Benz" by Scotty Gilmore.

Charles, from a snowy Holland. Brrrrrr

Actually, there's no need to cut the wires, which leaves open ends that could eventually short.

See Leaking Rearview Mirror - Good Ending - Page 14 - Mercedes-Benz Forum post #137 for pictures on how to fully remove the old mirror. I just had the old one rebuilt a couple weeks ago by Sybesmas & did the remove/install myself. It involves only 4 screws - 2 for the ends of the sun visors near mirror and the 2 holding in the light assembly. You can then reach in under the plastic molding strip and unplug the mirror harness. Instead of a screwdriver or tool specified in the MB Shop Manual I used the smooth end of a 7/32" drill bit to remove the mirror.
