NJ traffic ticket - tips?

Got a ticket in NJ for an illegal U-Turn, 3 points. The cop said if I contest it, they may lower the points or change the offense. You guys have any tips for losing the points? One lawyer wants $450 and will do things by affidavit so I don't have to go in. Another suggests that I make an appearance or else the judge will think I don't care. If I'm gonna go in, I feel like I don't really need a lawyer since it'll be up to the judge. Anyone ever went to court for a ticket?

Do you have a good explanation or rationale?

I did, in Louisiana, with a lawyer. Was for passing in a no passing zone - lawyer used a couple of tactics to delay and confuse, etc whle we got our pictures, etc in order.

At the end of the day, one of the delaying tactics worked, cop was not in court when we planned to ask for a continuance, and so they tossed it out.

I thought it was fine to make a U-Turn in the Left-Turn lane. There was no "No U-Turn" sign, but he said it doesn't matter since it was a double yellow. I haven't checked the actual law on the matter.

I'm under 25 and have one speeding ticket 4 years ago which was resolved through traffic school...but it will still show up on the full driving record. I doubt this is a good thing, but is 4 years enough to make it seem like I'm a good driver?

Based on the photo. This is a no turn area: double solid line and also hatched. The painted center divider may be a place to go in, wait and make a U-turn (when deemed safe) if it is painted one solid line (outer) and broken line on the inner part. Check your local DMV booklet.

In California, no points are registered on your driver license record if you go traffic school for minor moving violations and one may go to traffic school again for another violation if it is 18 months or longer between violations.

I think if you have a good rationale, they will ask you to plead guilty, half your fine and won't give you any points. As for speeding tickets, i think they stay in your records till 5 yrs and then goes away? Maybe someone else with speeding ticket can confirm that..

If it makes you feel any better I would've made the same mistake.

What you show in the picture is to be considered a solid object, like there is a building in the middle of the road; it tells you that you can’t be in there or drive through it.

Well, I didn't really go through it. I waited for the cars in front to turn and then I made the U-Turn around it. Like if you were making a left turn, but made a U instead. Turns out that it's still wrong, but I would have never thought or remembered from the drivers handbook.

If you didn't enter the hatched area but made a U-turn at the bend when traffic was clear, then I'd consider it an honest mistake.

From the way the yellow colored area is painted, i.e., with the direction of the taper at the end, one might logically think the turn is not allowed. It may be allowed if the taper was on the right side of the pix, I don't know. But how does law enforcement expect everyone to remember all the nuances of the painted strip in the middle of the road?

You may have a chance on pleading your case on why you thought that making the U-turn was legal at this part of the street. I prolly would have done the same. Make sure you dress well, with a nice haircut and appear as a decent young professional (at the time of court appearance) who made an honest mistake.

I went to court for a ticket last year. I was charged with driving over the "reasonable and prudent speed". I thought it was total BS because actually as I was driving at exactly the reasonable and prudent speed per the law so I contested it. Went to court and the cop didn't show. Ticket was tossed out and I got my money back. In Arizona the deal is if you contest a ticket in court, you waive your right to attend traffic school. However, after listening to the cases in court before mine, it seems like you still have the chance for traffic school if the judge offers it.

Warning

I see this post is kind of old, but as a warning to anyone driving through New Jersey, police are very strict about not making u-turns in the middle of the road. I see it all the time out of state, but it seems to be something that isn't done in NJ.

In any case, I hope things worked out for you.

Yeah, NJ cops seem to be very strict in general. I'm almost afraid to drive in that state, haha. There was an initial court date in November where the state refused our attempt to plea it down to a cell phone violation. The actual trial will be in about a week. Hopefully the cop doesn't show and it's thrown out...but the lawyer says that sometimes the judge will even give them a second chance to show. I can't believe how slow the process is.

In NJ you do not make U turns, if it is a divided road most likely you can not even make a left turn. They have Jug Handles to turn right and than come back across the road. Take the Jug Handle and then as you cross the road make a left turn. With all the traffic in NJ they dfo not want cars stopping to make left turns or U turns and back up traffic behind it. You got to live there and you will understand this. I spent the past 38 years there until I move to SC about two years ago.

Nj state is broke and they all are in need of $$. My wife just got a ticket for being on a cell phone ($120). She was parked outside dunkendonuts waiting for her friend inside when a cop came and knocked on her door and asked for her lisence and registration. He didn't give her a chance to speak and wrote her a ticket and said to show up on court on Jan 13th. Remind you, we are expecting our first child in Jan, and he can see that but yet set a court date in Jan. How ridiculous is that?? She was Parked not driving. We will contest that fully. But that goes to show NJ cops will be issueing ridiculous tickets to make extra $ whereever they can.

That is ridiculous! But sadly, so believable since I live in NJ...

Here is something even more ridiculous - my wife called today to set a later
court date. The lady on the phone asked if she was pleading guilty and my age said no and due to her preganancy would need time in Feb. The lady on the phone goes on to say that my wife should pay the ticket and why does she want to go to thru all this trouble. Then she said to change the dates she will have to look into the officers schedule since it's changing due new years and wants to make sure the officer can make it. They will mail us the dates which would be late Feb early March.

I couldn't believe the lady was trying to convince my wife to pay up. This goes to show how bad they need the $$ and making sure officers show up so the judge doesn't throw the case out.
