July 9th Arthritis Foundation Classic Auto Show, Dublin, OH

Had a nice successful weekend. In the Arthritis Foundation Car Show (its a biggy/major league show) I and the Dawg took 2nd place in the SL and Cabrilo 1990 and above class in the Mercedes Benz Featured Marque. Pretty good honor for the Dawg, its 6th award this year and 33rd in the last 2 and a half. Probably its biggest award against high level competition. They found 2 slivers of grass stuck to the thermal blanket under the hood (about long) and looking down the small hole under the hood, you can see the air conditioner condenser, it had some bugs stuck the front. Didnt even know that hole was there to look down. Also dinged me for my non-standard wheels (19 chrome), even though they are MB style (sort of). Those items alone cost me 1 points. Judging took place with 4 separate 2 man teams over 3.5 hours and I pulled 92.5 out of a possible 95. I cant complain. If they hadnt found anything, I wouldnt have learned anything. Sorry had to brag a little bit. (Should have seen the 1 million dollar appraised 1957 SL, it was beautiful, very high end show). Lots and lots of cars of all types!

Thanks Jeff, the car never looked better for a show, (3 hours stripping and re-waxing on Friday night), it was good to get graded tough, needed to see what to improve on. I almost chickened out of this show, but hey, they can't take your birthday! (maybe!). I've been tooling along at the shows this year, 6 awards in 9 shows. Been picking tougher ones. The awards have much more pleasing and more charity based this year.

Brag all you like Bob.

Photo's and your first post make it clear how hard it was.

If they checked mine they'd have a cardiac.
Bugs from nose to tail.

Congratulations on your award and well done for flying the SLK flag very high indeed!

Thanks, It's good to see what they were grading, wished I'd had a portable vac and the insight to look at the score sheet on my car, before they judged it. But I was sooooo tired by the show, I would have missed some things anyway. Can't believe when I vacuumed the inside of the car, I forgot to do behind the seats on the wall and what little floor their is! I spent 3 hours sanding and polishing my headlights the previous weekend before the show with the 3M restoration kit, only have them ding me for some cracking on the inside of the headlights! The outside was perfect. I had a bad feeling about that one, knew it was coming. I know it sounds like a lot of stuff, but they did have to dig more most of it. I will remember some of this next big show I do.

Very pretty car love it in the White.
Looks like you puts lots of time care and love into the car so of course the car should win every time.

Thanks, the white is really hard to come by, especially since it's also the last year of the 6 speed manual with the 350. Over here they are pretty rare. With all the shows I enter, I'll never get the big trophies, but it's always just lurking around the top area. The big awards always go to the off body restorations or highly customized cars. But I'll keep plugging away with the Dawg. Thanks again.

Thanks Davie, the car still has some paint issues, but the White waxing I did the night before masked them, but they need to be cleaned up. Need some new floor mats, and even though I spent 3 hours sanding and polishing the headlights, I couldn't resolve the issues with what's inside. Probably will have to replace them, ACK! But, if you step back just a little, it did look close to perfect for the show. I was pleased, it lost first place to a much newer and expensive SL if I remember correctly. Sometimes we can be our own worst critic's, and I'm probably guilty of that. Thanks again! Already done 9 shows this season with 6 awards, not sure if I'm showing this weekend yet. If so, I better get cleaning, again!

Hi Bob,
Is this a Mercedes only show? Is it held every year around the same time? It's not far from home would be fun to attend.

Congrats on the 2nd place finish, car looks great.

Cheers, Ken

No, it was like a 29 different brand show, it was open to every make, model, brand. If it was a motor vehicle, it could enter, but in their own make and or country of origin. Like for the UK made cars, they had a UK area. If you were Mopar, they had a Mopar area. For Mercedes, there were enough Mercedes to have their own area. We completed in our areas. It was a lot of fun and had a great spot! MBCA central Ohio branch ran our area, which is fine, because I belong to it, but we drew Mercedes from the MidWest, not just central Ohio.

I look forward to it. Big show, but it's nice they have it broken down by Makes and then let the clubs judge their vehicles. But then, the competition is really stiff, especially in an expensive division like Mercedes. These cars cost money and the folks get on the serious side! LOL
