SoCal Sequoia / Kings Canyon Trip May 15-17

***The trip to Sequoia/Kings Canyon is CANCELLED for this weekend due to rain and snow. ***

Please cancel your hotel reservations if you planned on attending with the group.

The alternate plan is some hiking and lunch at Crystal Cove State Park in OC. Call time is 9:00 am on Sunday May 17. The meeting point is:
Trader Joe's
8086 E Pacific Coast Hwy
Crystal Cove Promenade
Newport Beach, CA 92657

We will hike the backcountry for a couple hours then walk along the beach for lunch at the Crystal Cove Promenade or Ruby's. Weather is predicted to be around 70 and partly cloudy, so the weather should be good for hiking.

***I will leave the initial plans for the trip intact in case the SoCal group decides to do something similar in the future ***

The SoCal SLK group is planning a trip to Sequoia and Kings Canyon May 15-17.

The initial meeting point on Friday May 15 for SD and OC participants is:
REI, Tustin Marketplace
2962 El Camino Real
Tustin, CA 92782
Call time is 8:00 am.

The secondary meeting point on Friday May 15 for all participants is:
Chili's (surrounding parking)
25970 The Old Rd
Santa Clarita, CA 91381
Call time is 9:30 am. The OC/SD group should be arriving around this time barring any traffic catastrophes. There is a Starbucks nearby as well.

The plans for the 15th and 16th are as shown in the attached PDF.

On the 17th, we caravan/split up as needed for the drive home. Probably best to get an early start to avoid traffic. The plan is subject to change if we want or need. Plenty to see and do in the park.

Google Maps for the 15th:
Map

Google Maps for the 16th:
Map

The whole trip is contingent on favorable weather in the lower Sierras (like no snow!), so please book refundable accommodations only. Dining and activities are flexible. If the weather does not cooperate, we could substitute with a trip to Morro Bay/Cambria and Monterey.
On a personal note, this is my last SoCal SLK trip before moving to the East Coast. Looking forward to meeting up with everyone one last time.

Count me in!! The itinerary for the 15th looks really packed. I'm not sure if you can do the drive to Three Rivers *and* the cave tour on the same day, but I guess we'll see. This sounds like a lot of fun, and Three Rivers is one of my favorite little towns to hang out in, so I'm happy you picked this as the base.

Yeah, we'll see how it goes and what people want. It is vacation after all.
The hotel is actually in Fresno, not Three Rivers, but we will be stopping there along the way. The decent hotels close to the park seem to be booked or nearly booked, so there's that.

Hmm, OK. That makes sense I guess since we'll be exiting Sequoia on the North. It's a lot of driving for one day on Friday. We'll work it out.

Maybe try another hotel nearby like Residence Inn or the like.

Not finding much in the area, either overpriced, or pretty questionable places... looks like there's some kind of event that weekend? Marriot's website has a couple of rooms left at a big premium.

Dan, was wondering why your Fallbrook outing posts referred to 'last' trip there, you won't have the convertible top down in the trunk for half the year back East!

The front desk at Springhill Suites by Marriott said they have 4 weddings booked into the hotel that weekend accounting for being nearly sold out, but said that the Homewood Suites by Hilton is right across their parking lot at 6820 N Fresno St, Fresno, CA 93710 so you could try there for a rate around $168 per night after taxes. There are other hotels within a few miles that are more around $100 to $120 per night pretax.

I booked Saturday night at Homewood Suites by Hilton and Friday night I wanted to use up a free rewards night so I'm booked at a hotel about 10 miles south for Friday night at Holiday Inn Express - Fresno South

Bleen, check the rates again, shortly after my call to Springhill Suites I checked rates after booking Homewood Suites and now Springhill Suites by Marriott are down to $121 pretax / 145 after tax, front desk may have cleared out some rooms after my call. So I have Saturday night at Springhill Suites and Homewood Suites and will decide later which to stick with based on how full each hotel is.

Looking forward to the trip!

Life is full of twists and turns - thankfully!

Springhill is sold out apparently. Homewood I found pretty overpriced for what it is, $336 for 2 nights? Hm.

I booked at the Ramada, was around $185 altogether, same amenities.

Where can I join the group? I'm in Glendale so the stop at Tustin wouldn't work for me...

Added a secondary stop in Santa Clarita and updated the meeting times for both waypoints. We should arrive in Three Rivers around lunchtime.

Glad you are going to make it!

You might check out the Summerfield Inn on 6309 N Blackstone Ave, Fresno, CA 93710 - has better reviews with a recent remodel, is closer to the main group at the sold out hotels, and hotels.com is having a flash sale for ~$82 / night after tax. Hotels.com says it has been booked 9 times in the past 24 hours so they will likely sell out soon as a small property.

I switched my Saturday night stay to this hotel which only has 36 rooms, I was concerned about 2 large hotels with 240 rooms combined and at least one of them sold out basically sharing the same parking lot, so finding parking, traffic in and out, getting continental breakfast, check in and check out may all turn out to be busy and time consuming.

Looking forward to seeing everyone on the trip!

Changed my booking for both nights at this hotel, then checked again and found availability on sprinhill suites on saturday night, so I guess I'm doing the same as you, one and one.

Dan, have you been back in touch with the park service, after last weekend's storm? The forecast for my town calls for rain next weekend, but I guess it changes all the time. May's definitely shaping up to be quite wet so far though. Quite a difference from last year when we had 110+ degree days here.

If the rain starts to look quite firm, have you set yourself a deadline for calling the whole thing off, or is this going to be rain-or-shine?
