SoCal - Anza Borrego Run, March 5th

(Edited to remove "Option 1" route and just settle on "Option 2")

It's been a little while since the last SoCal meet-n-run. Before we embark on the big meet later in March, I propose a run to Anza Borrego desert next weekend, Saturday March 5th. With all the rain we've had lately I'm hoping there'll be some cool flowers in the desert.

The meeting point would be the North County Fair (CLICK!!) shopping mall in south Escondido: http://westfield.com/northcounty/ at 9:30AM.

This linked picture (CLICK!!) shows a general area to meet at the North County Shopping Center. There's two gas stations (Chevron and Shell) across the street from the parking area. It's best to fill up the tanks before meeting in the parking area.

We'll leave at 9:45 from the mall parking, take 78 to Ramona, crank the Old Julian Highway and Wynola Rd bypasses for mega-twisty fun and descend down into the desert. Then we'll take a turn south at the scissors crossing toward Ocotillo for tons of desert scenery culminating at the Carrizzo Badlands. I've seen vast wildflower fields here before and if nothing else the vistas are fantastic there. At that point the quickest way back will be to take the freeway (I-8) which is actually very scenic in this area. There would also be a casino on the way back (Golden Acorn) which could be a nice place to have some grub.

I'm leaning towards option 2 also, but cannot commit yet as I may have overseas guests visiting. I'll know prolly one to 2 days before Saturday (I hope).

We can move it to a different weekend if people have a preference for it. There's not that many weekends left before the big March shin-dig though, so if we're going to do something beforehand it'll have to be soon.

I just wanted to propose a relatively complete plan because it is such short notice. Others, please chime in!

I'd lean towards option 2 as well. The google images results really caught my attention.

How far south is this, anyways? If it's close enough to SD, I might just drop my wife off at her grandfather's haha.

EDIT: Google earthed it. WAY south. gonna have to wake up at 5 in the morning to get to this one. Any other Nor-So-Cal folk wanna join me in a caravan down to the So-So-Cal folk?

What do you mean, way south? Escondido is as far north as you can get while still being in the greater SD area.

Might be interested. My right leg doesn't work so well right now so not sure if I'd be able to handle a more aggressive drive.

Snowboard accident? Hope it's nothing serious.

Thanks Eddy, ya hurt myself snowboarding, no break, but right knee was dislocated and its healing slowish. Driving is fine as I mostly move my ankle between the gas/brakes but I have my seat back further then I would normally drive which feels more leisurely but less optimal for a curvy drive.

Guess I could always come out and be the back car and worst case scenario I get a little bit behind.

Dislocated knee or knee cap? It's not easy to dislocate the knee without great force. Do take good care of it and wear the knee brace as prescribed, esp during waking hours. Are there plans for rehab?

I took off "Option 1" from the original post, so it's Option 2 as far as the route goes. Looks like the weather forecast calls for a beautiful day this Saturday.

Here's a tentative roll-call for people to sign up (just copy and add your name). I'll send out a little PM-blast to see who else I can get interested.

Roll-call:

1) Durkatlon
2) slkluv
3) Noober
4) etyu (tentative)

Knee cap. My patellar tendon is in question - MRI shows it connects all the way from my patella to the tibia which is good, but its suppose to be straight/solid in the MRI and its wavey/wobbley, so I guess a partial tear or a stretch. Just following doctors orders for now and ya I have a brace for my leg but surgery may be on the horizon.

Anyways knee aside I think ill hit this meet with the gf, if anything we will just be the last car and if my leg isn't good for aggressive driving ill just fall a little behind

Sorry to hear about that, Matt...
I did something bad to my knee as well a couple of weekends ago (though not nearly as bad). I still don't know what it is, but sometimes it feels uncomfortable. I guess going on the intermediate slopes my first time skiing might have been a mistake (can you spell wipe-out?).
That plus a 2 hr drive so early on a Saturday are making me think about attending to this one or not (I'm going out Friday night). Will update if I decide to go. Road looks interesting though! :-)

Nothing compared to that day you had to get up for Willow Springs, eh?

*Sigh* So my wife decided Saturday was a good day to have some cleaning folk come by and give us an estimate as to how much it would cost to clean our house, and apparently I must be there.

Gonna see if I can talk my way out of this one but it looks semi-bleak. Keep me as tentative, but I REALLY don't wanna miss this one. I miss you guys!

Hi guys, this should be a great run, I'll add myself as tentative, I have all my interior panels removed from the car currently to fix the dreaded peeling paint issue on the R170. I was going to have the interior panels wrapped in leather, but that fell through when the shop reneged on the agreement. Saves me some cash but now I need to strip and repaint, very time consuming! I also have the door panels off and they are falling apart at the various glue seems, need to be reglued and partially repainted. I bought an alternate set of used panels that are only slightly peeling (good grief MB) and I'm thinking of putting those panels back in so I can enjoy the radio during the drive, but not sure their is time.

Aaron, a house-cleaning estimate that takes the two of you??!!? Now that's LUV!!

Roll-call:

1) Durkatlon
2) slkluv
3) Noober
4) etyu (tentative)
5) mbpaul (tentative)

Clean the outside or inside or both? Just empower her to make the decision in your absence or she can always call you on the mobile phone
