Talking QuickTime of 1/22/11 No. CA & NW SLK Meet/Drive - Half Moon Bay - San Gregorio - Palo Alto

The Northern California SLK Enthusiasts had another great California meet and drive on January 22, 2011.
We have to thank Don and Anne for a FANTASTIC event!

We met in Half Moon Bay, drove down the coast to San Gregorio with a stop for a Rally, and then wound up through the coastal hills on to Palo Alto for lunch at The Counter.

23 cars at the meet & drive with a 24th joining us at lunch...WOW!

CRANK UP THE SOUND on your computer!

A QuickTime show of the latest Northern California SLK Enthusiasts meet and drive can be seen here:http://home.comcast.net/~motzko/slkqt/1101slkw.mov

ENJOY!

As usual, here are some links to past events.
QuickTime's of the events back to January of 2005 can be found on this website:

I'm impressed!

Hope this isn't TMI

Here is a little information about our group and how we organize. It is mostly by email distributions as described below. We do some board postings to attract new people and many are also referrals.

First of all, we are not a formal group, just some SLK enthusiasts that like our cars and like to get together with others who share that love of SLKs. Everyone takes responsibility for themselves. We do limit participation to only SLKs.

The group is loosely held together by three coordinators, only two of which have the email addresses of our participants. One is myself and the other Tom, who collects information on our participants. Announcements are sent out to distributions as "BCC" so privacy is protected and emails will not be publicized. The third coordinator, Chuck does a lot of organization around the meets and logistics there.

Tom is one of the original participants, going back to January of 2004 with the group. I first met the group in November of 2004 when my car was on the way from a Eurodelivery and first actually participated in January 2005 when it was here. I generally coordinate the monthly meet/drives, which are led by different individuals who volunteer to take us to areas they plan.

Events are usually the third Saturday of the month and in the past have been monthly, January through November. At times, we have gone to a every other month schedule due to less people stepping forward to lead events, but then months in between have gotten filled for the most part. Our most common events start with an hour of meeting (10:30 AM) in a parking lot, somewhere near coffee and bathrooms. We then take off on a drive somewhere at 11:30, sometimes with attractions or stops and often concluding with some optional lunch somewhere. Some events depart from this typical agenda and may even be longer or overnighters.

We look forward to meeting some Southern California folks in March

Yep, Alice's is still there and we have stopped a couple times during drives, just not this time and the route this time actually crossed Skyline in a different location than Alice's.

Here is a drive from June of 2005 where we stopped at Alice's

Yes, we smelled the eucalyptus trees - pretty strong as you pass underneath them. Alice's is cool, but The Counter (where we ate), has superior burgers & food (juicy sun dried tomatos, spicy sour cream...just about any possible topping you can think of - all cooked to perfection)

Steve - fun to see you & the gang again. I'll organze a trip to Napa again this Summer (maybe the same as ~ 2 yrs ago) after I figure out when we return from the Tropics for a much needed break (June or July).

I am trying to think/envision how even 15 vehicles might fair on a Malibu Canyon run without losing some at the rear of the caravan.

How do you NorCal folks coordinate the caravan with 24 vehicles? Do you break it down to smaller squads of maybe 6 cars per squad? What's the average moving speed?

Eddy

Hi Etyu,

It is a challenge for us to manage our larger groups on rides, but we have come up with some tools that help...then just flexibility and hanging in there makes it at least do-able.

In the earlier response, I mentioned that we have 3 main coordinators. We try to space ourselves within the line of cars and probably more importantly, we use radios. Most the time, like Saturday, I am the last car as a safety (and it also helps with pictures). While I know there is a cell phone law, we use the "citizen band" type radios on a specific channel and tell people to have the passenger use them if possible or even just have them on to hear warnings of bicycles, turns and any hazards.

We have some extra "loaners" available for those that do not yet have radios, even though they are not expensive.

The leader of the drive works with our coordinators and if we are separated by lights, intersections, etc., when there is an area to pull over, we often do so to get the group together again.

Not a perfect system, but seems to work Ok for us....

Average moving speed varies with the drive...we have had an occasion where the group got split from fast moving and slow moving cars...

Oh Yeah, I forgot to mention, our current record is 28 SLK's on a drive and we frequently get 20+

Sorry to go on about this, but one of the great things about frequently being the last (safety) in a row of about 24 SLK's is that when people see the cars go by (we have people put headlights and front fogs on), it is so impressive that I get to see so many thumbs up and cheers as well as open mouth expressions.....

Hi Matt,
Sounds GREAT! July is an overnighter to Fort Bragg, but June and August are open at this point....

If you're adding days and destinations...Carmel, Monterey, Laguna Seca...some nice roads in that area. Not so many tourists this time of year, so rates might be decent. Gals could do some shopping!

Der Flieger,
We do have a drive in the summer months down in the Carmel area...one we do periodically. We are also looking to travel through there further south in March to link up with the Southern California SLK group...
