2011 SLKWorld California weekend

Hey everyone...

I've talked about this with a few people from SoCal and there seems to be some interest, so I'm creating this thread to discuss it and see if it'd make sense to organize something like this, in which case, help will be needed.

The idea would be to have a weekend getaway somewhere between LA and SF with a few activities and drives. Ideally it would be awesome to have people from the NW group to come as well... and of course, everyone else is also welcome!
So far here's a few ideas:

Pismo beach ATVs http://www.classiccalifornia.com/atv_rentals.htm
Hearst Castle tour http://www.hearstcastle.org/content/hearst-castle-tours
Saturday night lodging in Cambria or Paso Robles
Drive to Paso Robles through the mountains
Lake Nacimiento boat rentals http://www.nacimientoresort.com/mari...t_rentals.html
Drive up Big Sur

Keep em coming... but if we want to do it all it'd have to be more than 2 days

As you can see, between cost of gas, lodging, and some of these activities we're looking at a sizable amount of money (even if we can negotiate a group fee), take that into account when expressing interest or not.

I am interested in any or all of the activities you listed. I would hope to make it a 2 or 3 day trip for myself and possibly my wife too.

Timing is getting tight with with holidays coming up, so I am thinking 2011, hopefully early in the year. Does this timing work for anyone else?

Also note: The Pebble Beach concours is always in August each year. I know that August 2011 is a long way off, but when traveling from Socal, all the activities mentioned are along the way.

Very cool. Let's see what we can come up with. I'm up for just about anything. Definitely a drive up (down) the PCH would be very cool, with activities in between. Note that with the current funding situation of the State Park system in California, it's possible that some of these attractions may end up closed in the near future (for instance Hearst Castle).

Although i wouldn't veto any of the plans that have been proposed, cost and time wise, here are the things i'd like to do:

Hearst Castle tour
Saturday night lodging in Cambria or Paso Robles
Drive to Paso Robles through the mountains
Drive up Big Sur

Also, i could do more than 2 days, but lodging and food adds up quickly, so my vote is for 2 days (unless people are interested in splitting/sharing rooms).

Also, it'd be nice if Motzcoman could get the NorCal group to meet up with us since we'll be only an hour from their usual meets. This has been discussed before, but it fell through.

My suggestion is to skip the Monterey show; although i do want to go to that, hotel prices are going to be WAY up (as i found out last year trying to research this) and i'd kinda want to focus on that show instead of trying to cram SLK stuff in.

I'd AVOID any shows, not only because prices will be up but also because there will probably be more traffic and people around... we don't want a 1920s car going 30 in OUR road, right? :-P

There are crazy good prices on house rentals in Cambria. 2 to 4 bedroom houses go for not much more than the rate on a nice motel and we can share the house (or houses) with multiple SLKers. However, there are two night minimums on most houses. If their are 6 to 8 people renting the house, I believe it works out to $50-60 per night per person, plus a refundable security deposit typically $200 for the weekend per house. Not sure how many of us will go as couples, so that could be an issue on splitting up a house.

If 2 nights lodging in the same place is a show stopper for too many, we can always check out central coast motels.

Here is a link to one of the house rental agencies in Cambria if anyone wants to browse what is available:

I "have to" do the Pebble Beach thing each year in August for business reasons, but I am hoping we can set up an SLKworld meet earlier than that in 2011. January, February, March or April?

Im interested in whatever.

Obviously cant commit to anything until more stuff is finalized such as date, price, activities but what I see here seems interesting so count me in most likely!

edit. Oh I should probably chime in on the details; I voted for 2 days, but could potentially do longer such as 3 or 4 days.

Activities wise im easy going, but like any good car meet there has to be at least 1 spirited drive (aka driving around with the group to different venues only counts if we get to let loose a little bit).

Cost wise doesn't matter to me too much, im ok with sharing a room/house or doing my own thing within reason.

I would not mind at all driving down south to meet up. However I would not want to make the drive over the Siskiyou's if there is a chance of sanding rock or de-icing chemical's on the road. We have been thinking of a drive on the PCH through the redwoods with the top down. May kill two birds with one stone.

There's a few motels at around 80~90 a night for a February 2 night extended weekend for example (Cambria Pines Lodge is $90)... We could try get a group rate I guess.
The houses seem like a good deal as well. I'm up for either one, though the motel might be more convenient.

As for a date, I'd be good the first weekend of February, since I MIGHT not be available late February/early March. April would also be good.
We might not be able to organize everything by January...

I'm OK with February or any month really (not much of a planner as you can tell ). I do wonder about that early in the year in terms of the weather. In SoCal it rains frequently in February, and as we go up north it will get colder. To get people from Oregon/Washington to come down, we should make sure they don't have to cross any salted roads. We might also exclude people that put their cars in storage for the winter. Honestly not sure when those folks normally de-mothball their cars each year.

As far as rain, it seems a given that once we firm up a date, we cannot quickly move it at the last minute by a week or whatever, so if the weather is absolutely crap, we'll just have to live with it. As a SoCaller I'm probably wussified into only taking the SLK out when there's 0% chance of rain.

Not sure if there's a "good month" with guaranteed good weather we could pick, but at any rate that would probably have to be significantly later in the year. April or May would certainly work out for me as well.

Just hammering in random train of thought here. Sorry for rambling on.

If we're talking after the first of the year, I think it would be great to have a California total state meet! Middle point for me means no further south than San Simeon. So anywhere from Big Sur to Hearst Castle works! Remember, for those of us in the north, that time of the year is winter. It would be nice to get out of the rain.

Points taken... maybe early May would be better? still ways off but it allows for enough planning and organizing time...

I think that May would be a good time for the California Spring Meet, but the winter Meet should be Feb. or Mar.

Alright, so how about this?
March 25-27, 2011 (Friday-Sunday)

March 25th:
Meet at Cambria on Friday around 3 or 4 pm (it's a 4 hr trip from Northern LA or SF, and we have people from San Diego which would make it a 6 hr drive).
Do an easy/laid back activity that day (not a lot of driving)... Hearst Castle? Have to check tour times. If not, we can go see the sea lions, or just check into the hotel and have a welcome dinner.

March 26th:
Suggested drive out of my ignorance of the area. I've visited Julia Pffeiffer Burns park and it has amazing sights, we could have lunch in Big Sur. On the way back we could go into the mountains (this is the part I've never done before), and around back to Cambria. This is an almost 6 hr drive without stops, which would make it a whole day event.

March 27th:
Free day. We could have a goodbye breakfast, and whoever wants to hang out can do so, I suggest doing ATVs in Pismo Beach, or Hearst Castle if that didn't work out on Friday. :-)

These are just SUGGESTIONS, feel free to voice your opinions and ideas!

Dude, what happened to the 26th, planning on staying in bed to sleep off the hangover from the welcome dinner?

.......understanding that Bleen had either a brain fart or a senior moment, this looks fine. Also, for those northerners that couldn't make it on Friday, maybe there could be a short window on Saturday where they (or we) could meet up at Big Sur.

Personally, I have never DRIVEN the coast south past Carmel so I would really enjoy seeing this part of the state with my top off!

How's the weather that time of year? Are we far enough south to guarantee warmer sunshine?

Hahahahah you're right! Post fixed.
On Saturday we could meet any missing northerners at Big Sur, great idea!

March is usually pretty good around the LA area, but I don't know about that part of Cali... how is it up north in the bay area?

It can be a mixed bag. Usually, you definitely feel that "spring is in the air". In March out north, you start to really notice that smell of fresh cut grass (always reminds me that baseball is just around the corner). The gardens are starting to come alive again. And, while the weather is usually mild and the chances of sun are pretty good, the temps. in the bay area could still be in the high 50's to low 60's. Having said that, we are due for an early spring. We haven't seen one here for at least 3 years. Just keep your fingers crossed.

Ok so I've been doing a little research and I remembered a very very VERY long time ago I passed through one of the most beautiful hill passes ever. It's not meant for fast driving but it is definitely a sight to behold and enjoy. It's just something for our SoCal caravan to enjoy on their way up north.

Basically what it is is meet somewhere in the LA area (the northern-most area or SoCal, by my definition) and travel up the 101 N to the 33 N, through the mountain pass up to the 166 highway. It's a long and not-so-twisty but AMAZINGLY beautiful path with many stops for pictures and some of the most beautiful areas I've ever seen personally. it will spit us out right adjacent to the 101N and the endpoint is Pismo Beach. That could also be a considered meeting point.

The entire area is beautiful during the spring and summer, and if driven at night, yield so many stars. Though for this one, I'd say a day run.

I remember suggesting that road a year ago... never seen it before but read it's a good one. :-)
I'm up for taking it on the way there (or back).
