Pictures 8/13-16 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance 2014

Pictures of the 2014 Monterey Car Week which I spent as a guest of Steve ("Stinger"). I took over a thousand pictures so this is a very small selection, even though it's still a sizeable stack of stuff. Hope you enjoy!

8/13-14, Preparation.

I arrived at Steve's on the 13th and we immediately set out to do prep work on his car. After all, he would put it in the Legends Of The Autobahn show, and ultimately win (!!) but there's already a thread for that!

To prep Steve's car, we replaced the hood liner which Steve had painted but which had not come out as nice as hoped.

While Steve was working on that, I replaced his tail lights with the smoked aftermarket units. Here's a 50%-50% picture of the result.

And the final result of the hood liner re-do, and under-hood lighting reinstall.

On my car - even though I was not in the show - we ended up removing a peeling layer from my Spyder headlights. This was a pretty scary process of sanding the lights ...

... and then polishing them back to a transparent shine.

They came out really well!! After that it was time for a quick bath:

and we were ready for the week's events.

Steve made kick-ass ribs which we ate for days. They really were great, speaking as a person that never really enjoyed ribs ever before. I stuffed myself with these.

8-15 - Legends Of The Autobahn

I think all the important details of this event were already live-blogged as they were happening in this thread (CLICKY! CLICKY!), so we'll just highlight some of the other stuff that was going on here!

Actually here's a shot of the "field" that was in competition in the class that Steve entered. That first 380 SEC has 600,000 miles on it (although not the original paint job ).

Alright, one more. The Steverino Mobile in all it's show-quality glory

Now for some other stuff. Here is a 300 SL. This car is constantly driven by the owner and he regularly ships it from continent to continent for road trips. On the return shipment from his last trip to Australia they tipped the container that the car was in, causing $160,000 in damage which required 16 months to repair. But repair it they did!

Some of the other Benzes in other classes. Here's some nice 300 SE, circa mid-60s.

Here's an overview shot of one half of the non-competition part of the event. Here people just parked their rides for everyone else to enjoy.

One of those rides happened to be this nice SLR!

Here is Steve voting for himself in the audience favorite contest.

BMW were introducing their new i8 to the masses at this event. These cars were all over the place. I had an opportunity to sit in one, and while it is very hard to get in and out of, it is a really nice car!! I wouldn't kick it out of my garage if one ended up in there for sure.

Porsche was not part of the event, but some folks brought their touring equipped rides and hung out anyways.

A nice track BMW M1

It was a very cool show and if I'm back there next year I will definitely bring my SLK as well. Although not in the competition: the judging was way too strict for my beaten down daily-driver to stand a chance.

After the show we had drinks with folks from the various regional MBCA chapters.

8/16 - Soaking Up The Scene

On Saturday we basically had no itinerary, and were just soaking up the scene and checking out whatever stuff we happened to run into. There is so much car stuff going on in the Monterey area during this week it is absolutely impossible to see more than just a small part of it.

In the morning we had to pick up our admission tickets for the Concourse event at the Inn At Spanish Bay hotel. Parked out in front of the hotel were a Tesla, Ferrari Italia, McLaren P1, a mint-flavoured Bentley, BMW i8, a generic Porsche and a McLaren MP4-12C.

Here's a close-up of the P1. Very nice!!

After we got our tickets and had lunch at the hotel (great views, no pictures ), we scoped out some cars that were about to be auctioned off later that day. Here's a nice Ford GT:

A little Bugatti with rattan seats (Steve will correct me on the exact material used ), and a Porsche Speedster

This humongous DeLaHaye was supposed to fetch close to 9 million dollars, but expected by an expert that we talked to, to end up quite a bit lower (but still in the multi-million dollar range):

Here's another shot of this crazy car. The red on in the background is another DeLaHaye up for sale.

After we got done figuring out which car to drop a few million on, and after we saw Jerry Seinfeld (Steve's got a pic in the other thread), we drove part of the famous 17-Mile-Drive.

The Durk-Mobile:

Cypress trees which this coast line is famous for:

8/16 - Soaking Up The Scene (cntd.)

After the 17-Mile-Drive we went to a little mall area for beers and having been tipped off that a Ferrari club would be hanging out there.

Some nice diffuser action

Shweet!

Not sure how many cars showed up total, they kind of came and went. Certainly about 40 I would say, maybe more.

The Ferrari equivalent of Gummi-Pflege:

A lone Lambo showed up, who wisely parked far away from the Spawn Of Enzo

At the mall itself there was food and wine

and some live music!

8/17 - Concourse D'Elegance

And then it was Sunday, the final day of the Car Week, and time for big event. And big it was, in fact much bigger than we had imagined in terms of the sheer number of cars, and also the number of people that showed up (especially at $300/ticket!).

The event itself is focused on classic cars, pretty much 100% before 1970 and a very large chunk pre-WWII. My pictures are probably a bit biased towards the somewhat newer and sporty cars, but the real ratio is more skewed toward the limousines circa 1915 etc.

Here's an 1892 Philton Road Carriage steam car. Note that all cars drive on and off the field on their own power, including the steam engine powered ones!

A 1936 Horch 835 by Auto Union AG. This brand came out of a merger between Horch, Audi, DKW and Wanderer, and is a nice example to show that not all cars have to be immaculately restored.

Note that the Auto Union logo on the front consists of 4 rings to represent the union of the 4 marques that merged to create it. This logo is of course today still Audi's logo.

An overview shot of the attendees enjoying themselves for a perfect day at Pebble Beach.

A 1952 Jaguar XK120 with awesome bubble windshield. This is a two-seater, but only the driver gets to ride without getting pelted by bugs.

Especially for the Berliner, here is a 1965 Abarth-Simca 2.

A 1968 Ford GT40 Mark III. The ancestor to the current Ford GT which looks remarkably like this original. I had a picture of the new one among the auction pictures for the 16th (see above).

There were a ridiculous number of Ferraris at the show. There is no way I can include them all, so here's just a few choice ones. First up a 1965 Ferrari 275 GTB:

A 1960 Ferrari 246 S Dino:

A 1948 Ferrari 166 Corsa race car:

8/17 - Concourse Part 2

A 1936 Aston Martin Speed. How did this one sneak in with the Ferraris?

Oh, and a 300 SL. Actually this one was not nearly as nice as some of the ones we saw at the Legends show on Friday. But the owner did share some interesting perspectives on what it takes to get your car entered into the Concourse (hint: monetary donations play an important part )

One more Ferrari to finish things off. A 1967 Ferrari 206 Dino. Hot!!!!!

This is a circa 1914 Mercedes Grand Prix race car. Note the 3-pointed stars on the front!

A 1938 Mercedes 540K Streamliner.

A nice line-up of classic Maserati race cars.

How about some Ferrari 250s? They had tens of these as a special featured car for this year's show.

Here's a beautiful 1933 Duesenberg SJ.

These Duesenbergs had very distinctive exposed exhaust pipes that look very aggressive for the time.

Alas, the brand went the way of the dinosaur in the aftermath of the stock market crash of the early 1930s.

A Rolls Royce that won an award about to be driven by its owners to the ceremony.

8/17 - Concourse Part 3

Wooo! Final post.

A 1937 BMW 328. Proof that BMWs have always had that characteristic split front grille.

A 1939 Mercedes 320 with suicide doors!

Here are some of the award winners making their way to the ceremony. Note the bizar blue Tatra on the left.

Now we're outside the main area of the Concourse where a special area was set up to show off some interesting prototypes and concept cars.

First up is one of the original prototypes of the new McLaren P1, with a Henessy Venom in the background.

This is the Toyota FT1. This car is going to be pretty insane.

A heavily track-modified Lambo with the Mercedes AMG GT concept in the background.

Some more pics of the Mercedes. This is a ridiculous car that wouldn't last more than a minute on the road without parts flying off. But amazingly beautiful to look at.

And finally another shot of that Henessy. I guess they really do exist.

I want to thank Steve again for having me over. I had an absolutely amazing time. These pictures represent just a small sliver of all the stuff we experienced. It was pretty cool. Hopefully we'll get to do it again some time in the future!!

Thank you Durk, I know that going through those pics. And selecting only the best was a chore. But you did a fine job of recreating the highlights to give everyone a taste of this very special week. Of course it was my pleasure to host you and you can certainly plan on a repeat again next year, in fact I am hoping that others from this board will join on in, the more the merrier.

Durk mentioned the $350.00 ticket price but I was fortunate to score two free tickets from my representative at the San Francisco Chronicle Newspaper as a "thank you" for my company's business. Also, on the first night of our "Rib" dinner we had the pleasure of also hosting Lil Don and John from Sacramento, only to find out that John is a vegetarian who will never know about my famous killer Spare Ribs ;-) !!

This was a very special time and can't wait for next year!

No, he had one! John made a rare exception to try one of the ribs. They really were great. Ever since that meal I've actually been ordering baby-backs in restaurants and quite liking them. Not as good as your ribs though.

A great write up of what looks like an amazing event !!

Strange that between all those Ferraris , lambos etc what most caught my eye was a Toyota , that car looks wicked......

Craige, I agree completely and said the same thing to Durk that day at the show. No pricing yet, perhaps not even a release date, but when that beast enters the market she's gonna make a splash!

That my friend, is my Ultimate Home Car Wash toy and a project that I would like to market when I retire :-).

HERE is the original thread for the whole shabang. But what you see in the picture you referenced is the Dwell Suds from a Snow Foam Cannon hooked up to it. You can pick these cannons up from just about any on-line Detail website, attach it to a pressure washer and get those same results. The nice thing about my contraption is that it has reservoirs for soap, rinse and wax, along with a foaming brush, on board pressure washer and on board vacuum. It's like a quarter car wash on a cart........you know what they say about boys and their toys!
