June 13, 2010 SoCal meet - picture/discussion thread

Tee hee, post-SoCal run event thread. Great twisty fun. I had a great time at my first run being the lead car. Great people, cool cars, a fun day out. Some pictures...

1. Morning meet up in Escondido
2. Down on the desert floor inspecting Pablo's cracked windshield
3. Lunch in Borrego Springs
4. Lunch in Borrego Springs
5. Some of the fleet parked in Anzo Borrego desert
6. View from Palomar
7. View from Palomar
8. The group on Palomar (minus me and Tom who we'd lost by then )
9. The massive collection of bugs on my grill afterwards. The penalty for being the lead car .
10. Parked at Stone Brewery.

Many thanks to Durk for being the "pathfinder" on this Anza-Borrego + Palomar run. I am uploading photos right now and will post soon.

We did drive carefully and within limits.

The best part was following someone like a wing man and see his car get airborne for 1-2 seconds and land like it was no biggie.

Meeting up at parking lot in front of Taco Bell HQ. It was roped off for the weekend so we parked at the entrance/exit ramp instead.

Proud "papa" showing off his fully functional and integrated NTG 2.5.

Met at way point 2 in Escondido where a C63 was awaiting with Durk.

Weather was great going from waypoint 1 to waypoint 2, cloudy and cool. Same thing on the way home from Stone Brewery in Escondido, CA.

At the road side going in to the Borrego Springs area, checking on pebble/rock chips. Pebbles were mainly at the street median but when passing another vehicle the one in front usually kicks up a few.

My sympathies for getting a rock on the windshield and causing a crack that was extending. Hope the tape was sufficient so it does not enlarge/extend.

Parked for lunch at Borrego Springs:

At the Palomar vista point:

Nice and Cool inside the Stone Brewery, and after a good glass of beer and chatting, it was time to part ways.

Sorry we got to Stone Brewery a tad late (~3 pm) Tom.

Palomar's looking good. The last time we were up there, orange foscheck all over the roads and across the burnt landscape.

What time did you get to Stone Brewery?

Great run today guys! 300 miles and I averaged 18.5mpg - not bad considering how hard I pushed her! Felt really bad about my tires - next on my list of "to do" - gotta get new front tires - they were really slipping so I couldn't push it too much otherwise I would've ended up in the guardrail or worse! Anyway - here's a few pics...

Can't wait for the next one!

Nice pictures, Eddy. Yeah, I got some work to do on clean-up tomorrow.

EDIT: Thanks for the pics, David! We need some bigger ones though . Just upload your full size ones (2 at a time or so) and the forum will scale them down automatically. Also, I think your second batch went to the wrong thread.

Thanks to everyone that attended! I had a blast as usual.
Thanks for the sunscreen and hat by the way! Silly me, forgetting the sunscreen at home!
About the cracked windshield... I'll replace it probably next month. I took the tape off because the crack extended anyways. It's only on the outer glass panel so it's not like the windshield can break in half or anything. It's more cosmetic than anything else at this point.
As I said, I was thinking about changing the windshield anyways as it wasn't an original Mercedes part and it showed (rear view mirror hanging lower, vin number partially obscured, windshield not centered, etc). This just changes the time I was going to do it by around 6 months. Oh well.

Best part of the run was being airborne, of course. :-)
And I got to test out my new Comand extensively today, very happy with it.
Had a ~2 hr drive back home, as soon as I got here I cleaned the whole car... I hate hate hate bugs...

Damage report:

I just cleaned out the bugs with water and quick detailer (from Detailer's Domain Polymer Technology No Rinse Wash and Shine) and noted a c-shaped crack on the glass part of the right fog lamp (passenger side)

The glass is still smooth to the feel from the outside. I may leave it alone and see if it worsens or not with time. My guess is it's from those darn pebbles/rocks.

Hey guys - So sorry I flaked out. We have just moved into a new house and are so occupied with painting, unpacking and setting things up that I completely blanked on the run even though I had a reminder set up in my phone. Especially my apology to Durk who had offered to shuttle me...

Hopefully the next one.
