R171 With Upgraded Brakes - What Wheels Will Fit?

Hi

I've got a UK spec 2009 SLK280 with the factory fit sports package which includes upgraded alloys and bigger brakes with vented/drilled discs.

The factory fit tyres are 245/35/18 on the rear and 225/40/18 on the front but I have a problem. I live at the top of a hill and NEED winter tyres (I live in Scotland) and I can only find one make of tyre that fits the rear 245/35/18. Although I have nothing against Pirelli SottoZeros I'm thinking it would be sensible to buy a set of winter wheels but I have two questions.

1) Will 17" rims fit over the upgraded brakes on my car?
2) If I can only afford to replace the two rear rims is there anything I have to look out for? I don't want to buy two rear rims and find out it's made the car unstable.

Thanks in advance.

winter tyres

forget winter tyres if you are only looking to not get caught out by snow.

Buy a set of Autosocks (but only use them when you get stuck as they can wear out quite quickly)

The upgraded brakes can only work with 18" rims. It is impossible to fit 17" in the front with the upgraded brakes. MAYBE the rear can still hold 17" but it is very unwise to run 18 on the front and 17 on the back. The circumference will be different causing the pressure loss system on the tires to think there is a flat somewhere.

Winter tires do not need to be as wide as possible. In fact you want less wide tires. So, if 245/40 is not available for the rear have a look at 235/40. The looks on the car may suffer but at least you can still get up the hill. There will be more spectators when you're halfway up sliding down ...

thanks for the responses.

I have 4 autosocks but also need winter tyres. Putting autosocks on/off every time I want to leave the house or return home gets a bit wearing.

I contact Mercedes Benz customer services to ask for tyre recommendations and they suggest various 17" options. I have asked them what winter tyres I can fit to my existing rims.

Curiously they suggest 7.5J x 17 H2 ET 36 would fit over the front brakes. I have asked them to double check this.

Where can I get a Smarttop module in the UK?

Slkstore ships to uk

Please update your location/vehicle (model and year) in your profile as it helps the members answer your questions which usually are based on that information if you haven’t already.
‘Usercp’ at the top left of page, then ‘edit your details’ on the left side, ‘additional information’ near the bottom, edit your ‘location’ and ‘vehicle’.

With upgraded brakes I'm assuming three piston calipers in the front and two in the rear. Standard 350 R171 is two piston in the front and one in the rear. The front will definitely not fit with 17" rims.

Sport package SLK280s and 350s came with 17s. I don't see why you would need 18s to fit.

Sport package for V6's does not have 3 piston calipers in the front. Like I said, if there is three you need 18's. If there is two 17's will go too.

Remember mine is UK spec... From the brochure

Merc have double checked and confirmed that 17" rims will fit.

They have also added:
Quote:
We have consulted with our Technical Department who have advised that there are no approved winter tyres for the wheels fitted to your vehicle. Therefore, the wheels have to be downsized to the dimensions listed in the previous attachment.
So I'm thinking instead of going for 245/35/18 I should go for 225/40/18 front and rear. I'll stay within 1.1% rolling radius of 245/35/18 tyres.

It'll cost 1/3 of the cost of new wheels and tyres and still be better than summer rubber.

Anyone have any thoughts?
