55 6 pot front brakes

Just got an MOT warning about front discs and pads. Been getting warnings about this for 3 years now but while it has passed MOT and brakes work perfectly, it appears to be getting near replacement time.. EEK! A little surprised that the discs only lasted 60k miles but this seems to be normal and I guess this is the penalty for having a greater pad area. Incidentally, no warning lights yet? I only do about 4k miles a year. Anyway, I have surfed the usual posts but cannot find definite part #s for the 6 potters. Seems that the 55 is offered anything between 330 and 360mm disks with a combination of drilled, grooved or both. Brembo and Tarox seem to be predominant and I believe that Brembo where the OEM suppliers? Mine are drilled and grooved and I would like to stick with the original type. Eurocarparts list Brembos for about 750 each, a German supplier lists the same for nearly half altho Eurocarparts always seem to offer some kind of discount. Tarox are cheaper. Whatever, the first thing I need is the original part number. MB Club EPC has now gone! Any help out there please? PS. I know about floating calipers but are there floating discs too. The picture of the 360mm clearly shows a seperate hub mounting whereas others are all one piece. Does this indicate a floating disc maybe?

^ They are 340x32mm, floating discs. If you can sweat it out a while, EuroCP/CP4L will be holding a '50% off brakes sale' - and then you can pick-up the o/e Brembos at something approaching a reasonable price.

Brembo part. f.disc 09.9254.33

Thank you Terminal and thank you Jeff. Strewth.. it ain't arf complicated! I guess the 360mm jobbies may be for the Black. OEM part No seems to be A 171 421 01 12 which corresponds with the Brembo 09.9254.33 but some retailers say that they won't fit? Would prefer to buy from EuroCP since they are only about 20 minute drive away but EuroCP neither give any description nor original Brembo part number, only their own. I may need to phone them. Since it's not critical yet I don't know whether to wait and see if I can extract another 5% from EuroCP or sell a kidney and buy now. Hey ho!

Minimum disk thickness is 30 mm, mine were 30.9 mm so it was legal to reuse them, they were straight, no hotspots or warpage. jfyi. saved me $1200 bucks.

@55russamg I think you got your Brembos from europarts? Can you remember which ones?

Here you go
Eurocarparts
Soak the centre pin with Plus Gas / WD40 or similar a few days prior to changing.
New Pads are also required, I didn't replace with Brembo pads and they aren't quite as good.

Much appreciated 55russamg. Very sexy and countersunk holes too! Don't think the originals were countersunk, unless that has worn off. Which pads did you settle on?

I have some Padig part number 101221118 on Eurocarparts.
They work ok but are just missing that initial bite but are slightly less dusty.

I don't know too much about brake pads. Some have used Ceramic to reduce dust.
I may (quite possible) buy some Brembo pads?

Although the job is fairly easy to do it can be awkward to remove the centre bolt, that's why I mentioned soaking it with a release agent. It's not the retaining bolt that is the problem, it is the removal of the shaft part, the thing comes towards you making it a bugger to tap out with a hammer. "Use a steel hammer"

You will need to (unbolt) remove the Caliper to get the Disk off. Get some Tie Wraps ready and hang it up.

Don't undo everything or it could end up like this.....

330? 340 ? or 360 ? To ensure you get the right diameter, it's a good idea to either measure the old ones first, then measure the new ones in the shop, or take an old one with you when buying the new ones. You could also try GSF car parts. They have some shops in London.

Nice one! I think I'm going to entrust my indie this time. I know it's the expensive cowards way out . I'm not normally shy about car diy and I've done pads in the past on my Stag and Escort Cossie but in this case I'm not sure I trust myself especially with the bleeding etc. Klasse of Fulham have been very good so I'll let them tackle it.

Phew.. bit the bullit and dunnit thru EuroCP 790 inc next day del. Jury still out on the pads. Going to do a little research on these next week. EuroCP list Padig which judging by the price must be good but do not list Brembo pads but I may email them and see. Thank you to all for your knowledge and advice.

Quick heads up.......if you are ordering front pads for 6pot calipers from the Euro/CP4L sites, the pads specified for the R171 SLK55 are the wrong ones and won't fit. You need the pads specified for the CLK55 6.2 AMG.

Hi guys, back again! Getting close to fitting my new rotors and pads. Quick question, does the 05 55 with the floating disks have sensors and if so, since they are relatively inexpensive, is it wise to replace them? Thanks in advance.

Yes, there is one on each axle, 1 front one back. If they arent damaged you can reuse your current ones but theyre cheap enough to buy

Cool

I didn't replace my sensor (One side only) but then I started to get warnings.
Two days ago I had Brembo Pads and Sensors fitted all round.
I used Autodoc in Germany this time for the parts, as mentioned above Eurocarparts didn't list the correct pads. It's always a worry ordering another part number. Autodoc were very good, they phoned to confirm I had ordered the correct parts and they double checked for me, can't ask for more than that.
