How long to replace front springs R171

The red one went in for an MOT (thankfully not to MB as it turned out) at a local ex Vauxhall dealer - they lost their dealership during PSAs re-organisation.

No problems apart from a broken front spring - that was on Wednesday. No time to DIY so 'when can you do it'? Phone call to the motor factors and a request for the price of a spring. Er no, both...brakes and suspension change both sides. With the price of the springs then quoted 242 to change them. This close to Xmas thought might be a problem. 'Do not know when they will be here tomorrow so cannot book it in then but can do it on Friday afternoon do you want to wait whilst they are changed? 'No'. Car dropped off Friday midday and await a call 'job done'.for them.

Just after 3pm a call 'he has just done one side and it has taken him 3 hours, the other side should be quicker so should be ready after 5pm'. The decision was made to collect on the Saturday.

On collection the bill showed Labour 70 quantity 1. Presumably at that price just a charge for one hours labour.

Just curious as to how long it would normally take. Some McPherson struts are easy, remove the stub axle bolt, knock the stub axle off, undo the top 3 nuts and the strut is out, is the SLK that easy and was the garage stringing us along or did they 'screw up'.

The car certainly rides better, could be slightly softer springs.

As for 'luckily not taking it to MB - wonder what they would have charged?

The car has been driving UK roads for 10 years. Bolts corrode, rubbers rot. At 70 labour if they have done right by your car I'd engrave their number into the garage wall, buy em a bottle of Scotch and a Christmas card too!

I reckon 2 - 4 hours for both sides from Merc. @ 100 per hour!

Fairly straight forward job to do 3 x nuts at top turret
2x bolts lower strut end and Horizontal bolt / nut

If you took your time 1-2 hours per side

Only thing on removal can be the Horizontal strut bolt can be tight .

Maybe 4x wheel alignment after completion of job would not hurt .

I'm currently doing this job. To replace both springs in a well equipped shop, 30 minutes. Figure two hour to remove and then replace the front struts. In the rear, to R&R the shocks figure one hour. So figure four hours labor for the whole job, here at a dealer at $150/hour = $600. If you spend some time looking, you can find R171 parts cheap. Used parts off wrecked cars can be a good deal.
