Rear brake issue

I recently replaced both rear brake backplates on my 2006 SLK 1.8 Kompresser.
Since then there has been a grinding noise from the back brakes when I brake. I’ve had another look at the discs and pads today and they look fine.
My question is, when the brakes are applied are the parking brake shoes inside the drum activated as well? They looked ok when I had the drums off the last time but I’m wondering if something may have come adrift. Noise only happens when the brakes are applied.

No, brake shoes don't engage when foot break is applied.
Did you use some brake grease on the pads?

Yes brake grease used. It’s not a squeal but sounds like metal on metal.
