SLK55 brake rebuild

Hi all,

Not posted In a while so thought I would share my experience with you all.

So recently bought all new brembo discs and pads for the 55 for around Ł320 all in from euro car parts which was a bit of a shock considering my last bill on the 171 55 hahaha !

Started fitting them Saturday morning and all was well. Wheel off, caliper off disc off etc.. as the original plan was to paint the front Calipers in Performance pack red when the car was off the road for the weekend so we removed the brake line....... And the bleed nipple........ this is where it all went horribly south........ as most technically minded people will know steel and aluminium do not go well together and corrode. Well in this case the bleed nipple corroded in the caliper body so much the end of the nipple snapped off flush with the caliper! Oh ****. Both front Calipers where the same and they both snapped off. The nipple on the back of the caliper was totally fine as it was hidden from the elements and had been removed recently.

After tireless hours attempting to remove the snapped nipple with no progress at all I had to make the decision to “make it someone else’s problem” haha !

Removed the rear Calipers which was also a task in its self. It turns out facelift 172 SLK require Star to wind off the handbrake. Previous years you can enable this function in the cluster.

So now with all the Calipers off the car they’ve been sent to BCS Automotive so are known to be THE people to do Brake Calipers. Whilst the car is off the road and they’re being sent for repair to a place that offer refurbishment services, I decided to have them fully rebuilt and painted in the Red AMG Performance pack red. This was intent to be done next year but rather than messing about twice I decided to just bite the bullet.

So as a write the the car is feeling very sorry for its self on the drive cold and brake less. Brakes will be done in 6 working days. I’ll keep the thread up to date when they arrive

Here are some pics of the mission at hand

Word of warning all, check your nips !! They will all be the same !

Cheers,

Olly

Good write up. I have Brembo's on the front. They are things of asthetic beauty, almost a shame to fit them.

I can't imagine the frustration when they snap.
Snap a few things on my slk and always i was amazed by how many swears i can say in my head without repeating them.

A theoretical downgrade, realistically the two piece brakes was a ridiculous proposal from AMG. The only noticeable difference was the 2k bill when you had to replace them.

Red looks great!

I had the battle with all my bleed nipples recently, thankfully non snapped - although the rears were particularly bad.

I left one to soak in engine oil overnight then attacked it with a blowtorch the day after, agonisingly working the nipple left and right for a good 20 minutes until I could open and close it!

Haha, it’s a down grade from the previous car but really it was over kill to begin with. It’s a road car so two piece discs and 6/4 pot Calipers ffs haha looked awesome but not necessary. To be honest the brake feel in the 172 is a lot more powerful than the 171.

Hopefully getting them back this week end but latest Tuesday. Company they’re with are really dragging their feet. Can’t stress my desperation enough

Hi all,

Brakes back yesterday and fitted today at long last ! Ł700 lighter and nearly 3 weeks be beast lives again !

The red against the black and white looks very nice. Ended up working in the dark to get the job done but all good now. Needs a road test tomorrow and a celebratory wash weather dependent. Here are a few pics for you all.

Funny you should say that mate. I’ll stick with satin when the time comes. It extenuates the gloss red. Just need them ceramic coated when they’re done
