Tyre recommendation

Applied some throttle exiting from a junction to join the main road yesterday and experienced some wheel spin in the dry which was unexpected, a quick look at rear tyre revealed that the driver side one is close to legal limit. As all 4 corners are of different (budget) makes, plan to change the rears now and the fronts when the time comes.

Any make/model recommendations on tyres for the 350? I favour Michelin PS4/5 but they are close to £300 for a set of rears 245/35/18. Are there any alternatives which offers similar performance/better value for money at a lower price point?

I heard good things about the Goodyear NCT Eagle F1 Asymmetrical but they are only £30 cheaper per tyre. Usually go with Blackcircles fully fitted as they seem to be price competitive.

@frogfoot uses contis I believe. He seems pleased with them.
@jbanks15 used to have a 350, although US and a while back, he is a believer in value for money.

We are trying Bridgestone on our 350.
Comparing with the PS4s on my 55 I'd say better wear, less grip (especially in the wet).
There's better grip than PS4s out there, but higher cost.

Tyres on the drive offers discount for 2 or more, but our local one twice turned up with the wrong tyre!

Question

You can probably spin up any make of tyre when pulling away.
Generally the main brands are all good, I have Continental and maybe they don't grip as well as the Pirelli I had on previously but it's marginal and I only noticed the difference on a track.
Maybe you may want to try a slightly bigger rear tyre? A bit more rubber should help
You will need to go up in width and down in side wall ratio. Someone will come along and advise I am sure.
If you can afford it I would change all 4 if you have cheap tyres now.

Mine had Michelin on when I bought the car at three years old , the guys I work with recommended conti sport contact MO.

Never had anything else on the car since , gone through conti sp3 sp4 and on third set of sp5 now.

Fantastic summer and wet weather tyre and it does get used in ice and snow now and again but you will find the little yellow light flashing on regular in those conditions if pushing to hard.

Mine runs 17 inch rims , rear tyres around £115 fitted and fronts £95 fitted

The rear tyres will do two summers before replacement and the fronts dont seem to where out ! I change them as a pair on age once to every second set of rear

I have had 3 conti-sport 5's and 1 Pirelli P zero on the car since i bought it abut 10,000 miles ago. they had about 6mm tread depth originally and now have about 3-4. Rears seem to wear quicker than the fronts. I like the Conti's, they grip fine in the dry and i don't push hard in the wet. Also the sidewall protrudes 3mm or so outboard from the rim which is great, as any accidental kerbing tends to be taken by the tyre, not the wheel rim. They do tend to pick up small stones in the grooves and the Pirelli seems to do this less as it has wider grooves, so that's a downside for the Conti's. The other consideration is how noisy they are. they give comparisons of fuel consumption, wet grip and noise which may further help you to choose. Ultimate grip in the wet or dry doesn't really concern me. I've had no trouble in the dry but if you go fast enough on roundabouts/bends, the back end does come out a bit ! And in the wet just take it easy !!! Riding bikes for 40 years gives you a healthy sense of self preservation that i use in the car as well, especially in the wet.

I usually have Michelin pilot sport 4 but they were not available at the time I bought my new tyres so I went for Goodyear eagle f1.
They seem to give as much grip as the PS4 in the wet and dry so I am happy with them but I’m not sure how many miles I will get out of them on my 350, time will tell.

I have some 18” f1 rears that we’re on the wheels when I bought them. They seller told me they have only done 1k miles and to be honest they look like new so I well believe it.
I will be selling soon them if you’re interested? They are 245 35 18, let me know.

Not planning to buy new tyres until next year, but i am keen to get some "quiet" tyres and i have one pirelli p zero fitted at the front that i have had no trouble with. Looking on the ATS Euromaster website there seems to be 2 similar pzero tyres. One 72Db, one 68Db ! Anyone have any ideas or experience as to why the big difference in noise ?

Well with the first one marked XLMO TL, the MO stands for 'Mercedes original' whilst the second one isn't as no MO.
Both are extra load and tubeless so maybe the MO version is a very slightly different compound or has stiffer walls.

All else being equal, I wouldn't be inclined to pay the extra for the privilege of having MO moulded in and the extra 4Db, bearing in mind that the Db scale is exponential.

Yes, i was thinking something similar. But, I have had trouble in the past with Michelin bike tyres with soft sidewalls giving me a tankslapper or weave at high speed. strangely enough, it comes from the rear tyre. Wouldn't want this on the car ! Although i could give Pirelli technical a ring, i suppose and ask them.

Thank you for your email,
I have searched our system for size 225/40ZR18 92Y and can confirm you are correct that their are two fitments we can recommend for your Mercedes. The first one would be the P ZERO which is homologated and approved for the Mercedes SLK, Therefore the tyres are tailor made for the vehicle, chassis and the requirements of the vehicle manufacturer. This is the older P ZERO pattern.
The second option would be the P-ZERO which is not homologated for any vehicle and is a universal fitment which means this product can be fitted to any vehicle that has the size. This is the new P-ZERO pattern.
There are a variation of differences within the compounds used for the P ZERO (MO) and the P-ZERO. They also have different tread patterns.

So there doesn't seem any reason for not going with the new quieter tyres. I now now what i will definitely be buying !!
