2014 SLK55 Front discs replacement

Hi Guys,
just wondering if anyone has had to replace their discs on this model.
Mine has only done 20k miles and at the last MOT it was pointed out the inside surface of the front discs were showing signs of pitting, ripples and generally not in good condition. The outside looked perfect which is why I had not noticed. I had not even noticed any wobble under braking, however after being shown this I did then start to feel the vibrations under hard braking.
Anyhow I had them changed at my local Indi and all is well again.
I do keep the car clean and I have been known to wash it and roll it back in the garage. I am just wondering if doing this has contributed to the brake issue. They can stick on when I next come to use the car.
I will post up some pics of the old discs, which apart from the said issues, were still less than 1 mm thinner than the new ones that replaced them and I may have them skimmed flat again as a spare set.
Anyone else had this issue at such low mileage.?
Regards
Rob.

Rob. I was told something similar at my annual service by the MB Dealer regarding the front discs. It was put down to the brakes not getting up to high operating temperatures and also lack of use. The outside (the bit you can see) looks fine but from the video they showed me, the bits you cannot readily see did not look so good. So far no wobble or vibrations under hard braking so will not be changing them yet. I have also been guilty of cleaning the car and rolling it back into the garage which I know longer do.

@OP

Was the MOT carried out by a MBUK dealer? If the discs are not worn thin or warped, and don't brake unevenly, or produce any juddering - they're fine and didn't need to be replaced. The caliper doesn't produce a completely even force on either surface of the disc, so over time there will be differences in appearance.

I try to drive for a mile or so and do some braking to dry out the brakes after washing if the car is to be garaged and not used for a while. Helps to prevent the corosion and pad sticking that you are experiencing.

Are these disc issues on a P30 equipped 55?

Mine lasted a long time but I must admit I don't inspect the inside too.

Hi Terminal,
no I had the MOT done at my local station where ive known and trusted them for 20 years or so.
He just pointed it out to me and asked if they juddered or not.
I wouldn't take my car to a MB Garage due to past experience of the thieving sw.........! But ive mentioned these before.

Here are some pictures of the discs.
Pics show the inside surface with bits missing then the outer surface looking ok and finally the new ones.
Out of interest has anyone priced these up to be replaced by a main dealer?
I can only imagine it being circa 1k with them.
Regards
Rob.

Hey where's my pics?
Jeepers, those are horrible - and even I'd change them if they looked like that!

It looks to me as if you might have had a sticking piston in the caliper. Were both sides the same?

Do you ever drive the car aggressively?

I meant hard on the brakes, but in any case, it's very odd.

Appears to be a bit of delamination resulting from a poor casting or uneven heating/cooling. Are these genuine MB discs?

Yep as far as I know the discs are genuine.
I bought the car with 9000 miles on the clock so I would not have thought they had been changed prior to me buying.
I have replaced with MB discs and pads from Newcastle Mercedes via their ebay site at a fair price I think.

My front P30 disc at 42,000 miles look better than that. I think there something wrong. It almost looks like there is brake pad material in the vent holes.

My 2012 with P30 (I know, she's dirty but it's been too stinkin' hot to do anything about it) with 46,000 mi on original everythings. The "blotch" is just a shadow.

I'd say there's an issue there.

What do the inside surfaces look like? That's where OP has the biggest issue.

Yep the vent holes do look clogged up on the inside surface , which wont have helped with the cooling of the discs I guess.
The only punishment that they have had that I can think of is a couple of laps of the Ring and 155 mph to 10mph stops / slow downs when finishing a couple of laps of the Nurburgring last year . Other than that they have not really been hammered.
I would have thought they would have been up to that to be honest.
I still cant see the images I posted for some reason?
Regards
Rob.

I have also noticed that drying the bakes after washing my SLK350 and SLK55 prevented corrosion and brake sticking.

Im not sure exactly why, but my SLK350 had more of a problem with brake dust than my SLK55 has. It might be because the brake discs on an SLK350 are different from the brake discs on an SLK55 or because the SLK350 had silver wheels and the SLK55 has black wheels.
