Thumbs up SLK280 Sports Pack Pad and Disc Replace/Upgrade

First time poster, long long time lurker, thanks for the free tips over the years, will try contribute back.

I've got an R171/2007 SLK 280 with the sports pack I think (red belts and stitching, perforated brake discs), pretty much original except Android 8 head-unit replacement and cheapo ebay wheel centre cap replacements, anyways.

Pads and discs need doing, which I've been quoted ballpark for all four corners 1k from a reputable non-dealer garage while in for a ~C level service pre-MOT.

I could pickup a near identical full roadworthy spare(s) car for 6-7.5k but also don't have cost convenient storage just yet. My mileage isn't significant enough to consider something newer/more-efficient/ .

I've put this off for now until just before the MOT, but I've not asked garage what specific parts or options that 1k includes / will ask on Monday with your advice in hand I'd assume they've quoted based on some sort of OEM like-for-like replacement.

Are there different pad/disk options or kits to consider changing or upgrading while forking out anyway? What would you do?

Appreciated.

$1,400 for new pads and disks all around? Pretty pricey.

You can get a full set of Akebonos for a couple hundred bucks. You should only need front disks which will cost < $400. This is a very simple job and two hours labor at most. You might try doing it yourself maybe with the help of a friend?

I'll sell you a full set of OEM pads for $75, but the postage might be a bit high!

They're not currently and they didn't mention and upgrade, so would assume not...

Having spent 300 on servicing (filters, fluids, joint greasing) and 300 on pair of bridgestone potenza s001 rears just this week, it's all expensive!

As best, that price is brakes, MOT and re-balancing...

Front Brembo pads and disks for my 350 were well less than 100 to buy.

An hour or two to fit (easy DIY job).

Thanks for the feedback, this is a 280 with the sports package brakes, so they are a bit more expensive than the standard parts sites give you.

Speaking to the specialist garage (paraphrasing extensively): Would source parts direct from Mercedes so whatever dealer parts pricing plus local labour, that you get what you pay for with them and they wouldn't fit non-OEM parts on any "sports" merc of say 3L or more...

Current plan:

- Get a price directly from merc for parts and/or labour

- Have the wheels off and have a proper look myself OR pop it to another garage for second opinion

- Look at sourcing parts myself

I'd value opinions on if you do get what you pay for, and if the Mercedes parts are just a specific manufacturers re-badge?

I _think_ the part numbers would be (from https://mercedes.7zap.com/en/eu/fg/c...fg/0/0/42/0/):
front-pads = A 004 420 51 20
rear-pads = A 003 420 28 20
front-disks = A 203 421 13 12
rear-disks = A 210 423 10 12

I enclose the cost for quality used parts.

Pads and disks all round 235

I have used this company several times with no problem. (they are based in France, but shipping is 1 to 2 days.)

An hour or three to fit, free if you do it yourself

1000 seems very steep to me!

Thanks G0RSQ, Brembo was one of the names I happen to know and asked my garage about vs OEM parts, they said they weren't worth the name and wouldn't give me good lifetime compared to OEM, but I have no idea. On the flip side I also get that even if the Brembos did wear 2x the OEM (which I'm sure they do not), with a little bit of DIY and learning you can have 4x the Brembos for the price of 1x OEM / any margin wear difference between brands becomes irrelevant.

Spoke to local dealer and checked mymercedesservice.co.uk and 6/700 seems to be the going rate to do both front and rear, pads and disCs, inclusive of labour and VAT...

I've been using this specialist garage 3 years and don't think they'd deliberately try shaft me, so will be shouting them back Monday with opportunity to re-quote / re-check their parts costs.

Sounds like they were shafteing you with the first quote of 1000.00
Your car has nothing special with your brakes etc and simple to do .
And genuine brake discs can and do fail ive had it and replaced under warranty .

Other option is replace with cheaper but still quality brembo discs and go genuine brake pads .

Brembo disc can be purchased at a very good price from Euro car parts

Go elsewhere and get them fitted such a simple job and save your self $$$$$

I think you might find Brembo are a OEM supplier to Mercedes.

They are certainly brembo two pot calipers on my 2007 350

I phoned, they re-checked their parts costs, it's now 600 for all disks, pads and sensors + 200 if the hand-break shoes and associated need doing too, inc VAT and labour, which I think is about what I'd expect if your buying them off a convenient dealer and reputable garage rather than shopping around. I'm just going to get them sorted OEM and garage this time around, ensuring I get all old parts/new boxes, next time for pads or similar I will of sorted the garage / jack / time situation for some DIY. Will update once it's done with some pics and parts info.

Went in garage this morning, genuine MB dealer parts but no indication of original manufacturer, unfortunately the savings from your feedback and research now need to be largely spent on a new caliper...

Apparently a previous owner or garage have drilled out one of the pins and as a result made it unsafe. Apparently the pagid calipers as carried by eurocarparts aren't fantastic, any feedback or opinion with Caliper replacements?

That was a nasty surprise but you learn, went with a proper MB one in the end... below is the full parts list used with UK OEM parts pricing EX VAT @ 20%, hope it is useful for someone with SLK280 sports package in future:

FRONT

A0044205120/41 Brake Pad F = 49.99
A2034211312 Brake Disc F *2 = 91.66
A004217574 Front Brake Guide Pin *2 = 34.60
A004219691 Front Brake Spring *2 = 16.70

REAR

A0034202820/41 Brake Pad R = 33.33
A2104231012 Brake Disc R *2 = 74.98
A0004213274 Rear Pin Kit = 10.10

FRONT CALIPER

A0034203683 N/S/F Caliper = 315.00!!!

MISC
TUNAP brake cleaning spray = 5.54

LABOUR
FRONT discs and pads = 117.00
REAR discs and pads = 123.50
REAR shoes removed, cleaned, lubed = 50
Caliper FIT = 25
MOT = 50

I'm sill telling myself its an investment / saving money over a new(er) one.
