[R172] winter tyres sizes for 18"

My SLK250 fits wheels 18 with summer tires 245/35 and 225/40 now I would like to fit winter tyres. Does anyone have experience of what measures responds better to the car on snow and ice with 18"? Thanks greetings

At the back of the manual, there's a section for wheel and tire combinations. MB lists "winter tires" and suggests 225/45 R17. Of course that means a new set of wheels. That's what I did. I bought some inexpensive alloys and good winter tires. The second set of wheels also need tire pressure sensors. A US company called Tirerack has everything online so I got the tires mounted, balanced, sensors installed and shipped to my house. When I did this, I chose the same brand I saw on Mercedes winter test cars, Dunlop Winter Sport 4D.

It costs more initially and storing the wheels takes space, but I can swap wheels in an hour or so on a convenient day. The car feels slightly different in the dry, but only for a few days after the change. It has reasonable traction in winter conditions, let's say 150mm of snow or less. I don't like how the traction control sometimes allows slides and sometimes no slides at all. (We have an MX5 with the same tires and a mechanical LSD which is far more predictable in snow.) Ice is still ice, still needs caution. The summer tires are clearly bad in winter.

Thank you for reply. Very clear!
I bought a set of 17" rims + nokian D4, i'm very happy, the car runs very good on 10cm snow!
