Time to spend some money... =(

So - a question and a lamentation here.

Question first - I've gone through a bunch of archived threads, but haven't found a consensus on whether rotors and pads should always be replaced together. My service tech says yes - but in the next breath says that the rotors are in good shape. Car just hit 30k miles - and I don't believe it's been tracked. I'll get a caliper reading to be sure, but I'm curious what everyone's gut says.

Lamentation is that it also got stuck in gear the other day (autobox)... I'm guessing conductor plate. Seems lie that's been a common problem for a lot of folks. Time to see if the warranty is any good...

If the pads are worn to the wear limits and the rotors are in good shape (flat, not scored, etc) and not yet near the wear limits, I see no point to changing them unless they're close enough to the wear limits that it's likely the rotors will wear past the limits faster than the pads do.

If they're on the edge, change them.

i guess ymmv, but i hear about people changing rotors at 60k miles = 2 sets of pads, then rotor change. Like the other poster said, depends on the condition of your rotors.

Are your pads done already at 30k miles? my service advisor said there's like like 40% left, and I just hit 30k miles. Of course, I rarely do hard braking. A lot of freeway driving; even in the city, I don't brake really hard. Letting off the gas on the amg lets the car coast to the stop. Also, I downshift sometimes, if you keep the car in the 2k range, you can stop pretty much without braking.

I changed all four rotors in the SLK230K at 129,000 miles. The fronts were right at the wear limit when the pads were worn out (probably third-fourth set), and the rears were close enough at that point that I went for all of them.

At 85000 miles in the SLK280, pads were replaced just before I bought the car and the original rotors are fine, should run another 30-40K miles easily.

No need to replace brake discs/rotors if they are above the wear limits (based on micrometer measurements).

I am still on the original front and rear brake pads from when I "backdated" (from 2008 to 2007) my front and rear brakes. That was about 60K miles ago. The front pads may need replacement at next service, however. Current mileage is near 94K miles.

Addendum:

Test values for front brake discs:
Model 171.473 (SLK55):
new: 32 mm,
wear limit: 30 mm
wear limit for maintenance service: 30.6mm

Models 171.445/454/456 (SLK 200/280/350):
new: 28 mm
wear limit: 25,4 mm
water limit for maintenance service: 26 mm

Test Values for rear brake discs:
Model 171.473:
new: 26 mm
wear limit: 24 mm
water limit for maintenance: 24,6 mm

Models 171.454/456/458, model 171.442/445 with code 952:
new: 10 mm
wear limit: 8,3 mm
wear limit for maintenance service: 8,8 mm

Thanks all - pretty much confirms my gut. I don't mind changing the pads out, since I've been itching to go to Akebonos since I picked Heidi up. I rarely use the brakes, but I can't vouch for what the prior owner did! We'll measure them out and go from there.

Probably no escaping the conductor plate issue, though!

conductor plate issue was usually for m272 engine but M113 has it but very rare in my opinion

This is not related to the engine type but related to the (sensors in the conductor plate) part used in the transmission itself: 722.9 transmission W7A 700 variant.

I did get this conductor plate failure (on the R171), service advisor states the replacement is an updated part (hopefully will be longer-lasting). Glad it occurred while under warranty.
