speed rating

Why does speed rating differ front to rear ? will it matter if all 4 are the same ?

recommended options for the slk200 ?

FRONT TYRE SIZE REAR TYRE SIZE
Select this option 205/55R16 V 91 Select this option 225/50R16 V 92
Select this option 225/45R17 Y 90 Select this option 245/40R17 W 91
Select this option 225/40R18 Y 92 Select this option 245/35R18 W 92
Select this option 225/35R19 Y 88 Select this option 235/35R19 W 92
Select this option 225/35R19 Y 88 Select this option 255/30R19 Y 91
Select this option 205/55R16 W 91 Select this option 225/50R16 W 92

These are what im looking at ordering ,and these are the only options i am given ,

so do i go for the different rating ,or get 4 the same ?

Choosing a tyre with a lower rating than is appropriate for your car can invalidate your insurance.
Choosing a tyre with higher rating is OK as it increases you total maximum speed rating.
Ratings indicate the maximum speed at which the tire may be used with maximum load when the maximum listed inflation pressure is used.
Stick to what Mercedes suggests unless the car is heavily modified and you drive more than half and hour at top speed.
Top speed actually kills the tyre due to high friction and heat.

And to answer the question, they differ due to different load to each axle and more friction produced due to the transmission of power to the real axle.
Y and W ratings have little difference but still can be a reason for an insurance company to refuse to pay.

Try to fit 4 with the highest rating and not 4 with the lowest.
And also check the load factors as are crucial in road handling (stiffness of sidewall)
