Excessive brake pedal travel

I think my slk320 has some sort of brake issue. The pedal seems to go down a lot farther than it should before the car starts to slow down.
The front brakes are new, pads and rotors.
I have not bled the system yet.
The back brakes are okay, but I have the parts to replace the pads and rotors, just haven't gotten to it yet.

The brakes overall seem to work fine I just don't like that I have to push the pedal down pretty far before the brakes start doing work. Other cars I have had do not do this. It's funny when I get in my wifes new acura because the brakes are very sensitive compared to the 02 slk we always lunge forward a few times until I get the hang of it.

Any idea what to look at first?
